Two massive grocery stores are now closing in Texas within a few weeks of each other according to the latest WARN filings.
Texas shoppers will have two fewer options for groceries after the Albertsons-owned Tom Thumb and Randalls shut down within a few weeks of each other, reports The-Sun.
The Tom Thumb grocery store is located in Grapevine, which is about 25 minutes north of Dallas.
One store is closing by February 24, but an Albertsons location about a mile up the road will be converted to a Tom Thumb shortly after.
Meanwhile, the Randalls in Braker Village in Austin is set to shutter “on or about” February 10, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter to the Texas Workforce Commission.
The notice also warned that the pharmacy in the store would close at an earlier date but did not specify when.
Shoppers shared on Reddit that the store is having a final sale to clear out inventory, offering between 20% and 70% off of items.
In the r/Austin subreddit, one customer wrote, “I spent $130 yesterday on $250 worth of groceries, toiletries, cleaning products, etc.”
They added that even the wine was on sale for 40% off.
Unfortunately, the sale didn’t mean much to those who prefer to shop at H-E-B — the local competition.
“H-E-B is far superior than any national grocery chain,” wrote one Reddit user.
“Not only are the prices better, but the multiple house brands are of excellent quality; often exceeding the ‘name’ brands.”
“The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Randall’s or Kroger is that they’re stodgy and bland.”
Another shopper said they worked next to the closing Randalls location and that even the sale prices were still higher than H-E-B’s regular prices.

A beloved restaurant now makes an unexpected closure at a California location due to crime and safety reasons, sources report.
A Popular Denny’s restaurant has closed its doors for good due to crime in Oakland, California, reports The-Sun.
Customers were greeted at the restaurant on 601 Hegenberger Road with a sign on the doors after it closed at 1 pm, on January 31.
The sign explained the reason for the closure.
“Closing a restaurant location is never an easy decision or one taken lightly,” the notice said.
“However, the safety and well-being of Denny’s team members and valued guests is our top priority.”
Denny’s also thanked its customers and staff for the 54 years it had been in operation.
“Denny’s offers its heartfelt thanks to the team members and the local community for their love of the Denny’s brand; it has been a pleasure serving you,” the sign said.
The notice added that staff members at the Oakland location would be offered positions at other branches where available.
This spot was less than two miles from Oakland International Airport so it was often visited by tourists and travelers after their flights.
Police said its location attracted thieves would would target these visitors and their cars with luggage, according to SFGATE.
Some of the location’s final few customers shared their sad thoughts on the situation, according to Fox affiliate KTVU.
Aloy Ekane, a customer and Grubhub worker, shared why they would particularly miss that spot.
“I feel so bad for Oakland because it’s like everybody’s leaving,” Ekane said.
“Oh yeah, I eat here all the time, sometimes [at] midnight. I come here and eat, because [in the] last few years, it was quite good.
“Just a good place. I feel so bad that they’re leaving, you know?”
