The most attractive model isn’t necessarily the one with the lowest startup cost. A better question is:
How quickly can you get your first paying customer, and how easily can the business scale afterward?
Let’s break them down below and I’ll share my experiences with you on the ones I’ve personally worked on.
1. Freelancing
Freelancing remains one of the simplest ways to start an online business because you can sell a skill you already have.
Potential services include:
Writing
Graphic design
Video editing
Web development
Bookkeeping
Copywriting
Photography
Social media management
Data analysis
Email marketing
Virtual assistance
Vectorizing (Screen Printing files)
Digitizing (Embroidery files)
The major advantage is that you don’t need to create a product before making money.
You find a customer with a problem, offer a solution, complete the work, and get paid.
Best for: People who already have a marketable skill.
Startup cost: Low.
Scaling potential: High if you eventually turn your freelance service into an agency.
Some of these services you can arbitrage. For example, you can get artworks digitized at Collective Embroidery for a reseller price and mark up the prices to businesses who need their logos digitized for uniforms.
You profit the difference by simply delegating. The same works for vectorizing art for screen printing.
If you have significant experience in a particular field, consulting can be one of the highest-value online business ideas.
Businesses pay consultants to help them solve expensive problems.
That could mean:
Marketing
Sales
Finance
Operations
Human resources
Technology
Business strategy
Manufacturing
Recruiting
Customer acquisition
You don’t necessarily need thousands of customers.
A consultant charging $2,000 per client needs only five clients to generate $10,000 in monthly revenue.
The difficult part is establishing credibility.
Best for: Experienced professionals and entrepreneurs.
Startup cost: Low.
Scaling potential: Very high.
3. Online Coaching
Coaching is similar to consulting, but it is usually centered around helping an individual achieve a specific outcome.
Examples include:
Fitness coaching
Career coaching
Business coaching
Sales coaching
Financial education
Productivity coaching
Leadership coaching
Personal development
The strongest coaching businesses generally focus on a very specific customer and outcome.
Instead of saying:
“I help people become successful.”
A stronger offer might be:
“I help first-time sales managers build their first high-performing sales team.”
Specific problems are easier to market.
4. Sell Digital Products
Digital products are attractive because you can create something once and potentially sell it repeatedly.
Examples include:
Ebooks
Templates
Spreadsheets
Checklists
Design assets
Printables
Notion templates
Business documents
Guides
Digital planners
Research reports
The biggest advantage is the lack of physical inventory.
A $29 digital product sold 100 times generates $2,900 in revenue without manufacturing 100 physical products.
Best for: Creators with specialized knowledge or design skills.
My eBooks have sold over the years and while they didn’t make me rich, it was a great way to provide incredible value in a book-format while making a little bit of extra cash.
Reaching The 10K Mark is a book about the challenges of reaching $10,000 per month and my struggle to hit this goal. If you’re struggling to make more money, and have the ambition to make more, this book will hit home.
I wrote Unlock Your Personal Brand after I scaled my website and was earning multiple streams of income online. Here I walk you step by step on how to start building a brand that allows you to live on your own terms.
I was earning around $20,000 to $30,000 per month when I wrote this book.
5. Build a Niche Website
Why niche websites are so valuable.
A niche website can become an online asset that generates revenue from multiple sources.
For example, a website about home espresso could generate income through:
Display advertising
Affiliate marketing
Product reviews
Sponsorships
Digital guides
Email newsletters
Partnerships
The key is choosing a topic with both search demand and commercial potential.
A website doesn’t have to become enormous to become valuable.
A highly targeted audience can sometimes be more profitable than millions of random visitors.
My site, this one you’re reading, at some point was earning upwards of $80,000 per month in advertising revenue and sponsorship deals.
During its biggest year, FrankNez averaged $10K per month during its slowest quarter, $25K per month during its second slowest quarter, then $40K per month its second to best quarter, and $70K per month during its best quarter.
I also consult small brands looking to turn their site into a small business. You can email me with a few questions to get started.
6. Start a Newsletter Business
Email newsletters are another online business model that can begin with a relatively small audience.
You can monetize through:
Paid subscriptions
Sponsorships
Advertising
Affiliate partnerships
Digital products
Consulting
Events
A newsletter about a narrow topic can become especially valuable if the audience consists of professionals or consumers with purchasing power.
For example:
Real estate investing
AI tools
Small-business finance
Personal finance
Retail investing
Marketing
Technology
Local business
The business is not simply the newsletter.
The audience is the asset.
For this type of online business to work, you will need to either have a site, channel, or platform where you have gathered enough newsletter signups to work.
For example, the official FrankNez Newsletter provides readers with weekly financial and business news.
Here, you’ll see headlines on retail and store closures, banking fraud stories, what retail investors are buying in the stock market, and much more.
7. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing involves recommending products or services and earning a commission when someone purchases through your referral.
You can build an affiliate business through:
A website
YouTube
TikTok
Instagram
Email
Podcasts
Online communities
The best affiliate businesses aren’t simply collections of affiliate links.
They solve purchasing problems.
For example:
Weak approach: “10 laptops.”
Stronger approach: “The 7 Best Laptops for Freelance Video Editors Under $1,500.”
The second example addresses a specific buyer and purchasing decision.
Affiliate marketing is all about selling. So, if you’re good at selling then you may be able to create a profitable online business from just affiliate marketing.
8. Start a YouTube Business
YouTube can become an online business rather than simply a social media hobby.
Revenue can come from:
Advertising
Sponsorships
Affiliate marketing
Memberships
Products
Courses
Consulting
Merchandise
You don’t necessarily need millions of subscribers.
A channel with 20,000 highly targeted viewers can potentially be more valuable than a channel with 500,000 viewers who aren’t interested in the products or services being sold.
When I monetized my YouTube channel it was such an accomplishment. In my book Unlock Your Personal Brand I go over how you can decide what type of channel to start and how to bring traffic to it.
9. Social Media Management
Millions of businesses know they need social media but don’t have the time or expertise to manage it.
That’s an opportunity.
A social media management business can provide:
Content calendars
Post creation
Short-form video
Community management
Analytics
Social strategy
Scheduling
Account management
One person can start by managing a few accounts and gradually build an agency.
Best for: People who understand social platforms and content.
10. Start an Online Advertising Agency
Businesses need customers.
That makes customer acquisition one of the most valuable services you can sell.
An online advertising agency can specialize in:
Google Ads
Meta Ads
TikTok Ads
YouTube Ads
LinkedIn Ads
Retargeting
Lead generation
The important distinction is that you’re not really selling “ads.”
You’re selling a business outcome.
For example:
“We generate qualified roofing leads.”
is generally a stronger proposition than:
“We manage Facebook advertising.”
If you come from the advertising or promoting space, this could be a great niche to get into. It is a high-demand skill set that not many people have.
11. Start an SEO Business
Search engine optimization can become a recurring-revenue service.
Businesses may pay for:
Keyword research
Content strategy
Technical SEO
Link building
Local SEO
Content optimization
Competitor research
SEO audits
SEO can also be combined with content production.
Instead of selling individual articles, an agency could sell a monthly growth system consisting of research, content, optimization, internal linking, and reporting.
This is for the person who is a little tech savvy and likes improving analytics.
12. Start a Virtual Assistant Business
Virtual assistance is one of the easiest online businesses to enter because many entrepreneurs simply need help getting things done.
Services can include:
Email management
Scheduling
Data entry
Customer service
Research
Administrative work
CRM management
Bookkeeping assistance
Social media scheduling
Over time, a virtual assistant can specialize and increase rates—or build a team and turn the service into an agency.
13. Print-on-Demand
Source: Collective Embroidery.
Print-on-demand allows entrepreneurs to sell products without purchasing large quantities of inventory upfront.
Potential products include:
T-shirts
Hoodies
Hats
Posters
Mugs
Accessories
Home décor
The business owner creates the design and markets the product while a third-party provider handles production and fulfillment.
The downside is that competition can be intense.
A generic shirt business is difficult to differentiate.
A brand serving a specific community, profession, hobby, or interest can have a much stronger position.
Go super niche with this one. I was a broker for a few years in the promotional products industry and made thousands of dollars monthly selling printed and embroidered apparel to local businesses.
My biggest paycheck doing this was a $14,000 check, I won’t ever forget it. I’m not a broker anymore but I now own a business in the same industry with my brother.
Ecommerce remains one of the most obvious online business opportunities.
You can sell:
Physical products
Private-label products
Handmade products
Specialty products
Subscription products
Personalized products
Business-to-business products
The important part is choosing the right market.
Don’t start with:
“What can I sell?”
Start with:
“Who can I serve, and what do they already spend money on?”
That shift can dramatically improve your odds.
15. Dropshipping
Dropshipping allows an entrepreneur to sell products without holding inventory themselves.
When a customer places an order, the supplier fulfills it.
The appeal is obvious:
Low initial inventory requirements
No warehouse
Potentially low startup costs
Easy product testing
But dropshipping is not automatic income.
Margins, supplier reliability, shipping times, refunds, customer service, and advertising costs can all affect profitability.
It works best when paired with strong branding, product selection, and customer acquisition.
Before I began to do broker work in the promotional products industry, I was dropshipping merchandise that were hard to come by on eBay.
I was easily earning $400 to $600 of extra cash on the side every month.
My business neighbor dropships knives, though he has a warehouse now. But he didn’t start that way.
Find a niche, identify what people are looking for, and start selling.
16. Build an Online Clothing Brand
Clothing is crowded—but that doesn’t mean there isn’t opportunity.
The strongest brands usually aren’t selling “clothes.”
They’re selling an identity.
A clothing brand can target:
Fitness
Motorsports
Streetwear
Outdoor enthusiasts
Professional communities
Music
Gaming
Hobbies
Cultural communities
The brand, audience, and distribution can ultimately become more valuable than the individual garments.
My entire entrepreneurial journey started with building clothing brands. I built my first clothing brand when I was 19, then my second one when I was 22.
It was a lot of fun, and I was able to get Instagram male models across the country to wear my clothing and take awesome pictures for our IG.
I sold a few but moved to other online business ventures. My love for building a clothing brand has not left me — this is something that I can still see growing one day.
17. Online Tutoring
If you’re highly knowledgeable in a subject, tutoring can become a straightforward online business.
Potential markets include:
Mathematics
Languages
Science
Music
Test preparation
Coding
Business
Writing
Tutoring can start as a one-person service and later expand into group classes, courses, memberships, or a tutoring agency.
18. Create an Online Course
An online course allows you to package expertise into a structured educational product.
The mistake many creators make is creating the course first and looking for customers afterward.
A better approach is to validate the problem first.
If people are already asking you how to accomplish something, that’s potentially a signal that there is a product opportunity.
19. Build a Paid Membership Community
Membership businesses can generate recurring revenue.
For example, members could pay monthly for access to:
Educational content
Industry research
Networking
Private communities
Templates
Events
Coaching
Market analysis
Specialized resources
Recurring revenue can make a business more predictable, but only if the membership continuously provides enough value to justify the subscription.
During the ‘meme stock frenzy’ of 2021, readers flocking to FrankNez became so grateful for the market analysis that they began to support my platform on Patreon.
Readers had made their first $10,000, first $100,000, and some, their first million dollars.
Today, our Patreon remains a place for readers to support the site.
20. Build Software or SaaS
Software can be one of the most scalable online business models.
A SaaS company might charge customers:
$10/month
$49/month
$199/month
$999/month
Or significantly more for enterprise solutions
Potential software ideas include tools for:
Scheduling
Accounting
Marketing
Sales
Customer service
Analytics
Project management
AI automation
Industry-specific workflows
The barrier is higher than starting a freelance business, but the potential scale is much greater.
21. Start an AI Automation Business
One of the more interesting online business opportunities in 2026 is helping businesses automate repetitive processes.
Examples include:
AI customer-service systems
Automated appointment scheduling
Lead qualification
Email workflows
Document processing
Internal knowledge systems
AI-assisted content workflows
Sales automation
Data processing
The opportunity isn’t necessarily “sell AI.”
It’s:
Find a repetitive business process and make it faster, cheaper, or easier.
That’s a much stronger business proposition.
22. Start a Lead-Generation Business
Lead generation can be extremely valuable because businesses will pay for customers.
You can build websites or advertising systems that generate leads for industries such as:
Roofing
Plumbing
Landscaping
Legal services
Insurance
Real estate
Remodeling
Automotive
Business services
The model can involve selling leads individually or charging businesses a recurring fee for qualified leads.
23. Start an Online Recruiting Business
Companies constantly need qualified workers.
A specialized recruiting business can focus on a particular industry instead of attempting to recruit everyone.
Examples include:
Healthcare
Technology
Construction
Finance
Sales
Manufacturing
Logistics
The more specialized the recruiter becomes, the more valuable their network and knowledge can become.
24. Start a Digital Design Studio
Graphic design can evolve from freelancing into a full business.
Services can include:
Logos
Brand identities
Website graphics
Packaging
Social media graphics
Presentations
Advertisements
Product mockups
Infographics
Instead of charging by the hour, a design business can eventually sell defined packages.
For example:
Startup Branding Package — $2,500
Monthly Creative Package — $1,500/month
This makes revenue easier to forecast.
You can use platforms like Canva to create thumbnails for YouTube channels, advertising pamphlets for small businesses in your area, birthday or business cards, and so much more.
25. Build a Content or Media Business
A content business can start with a website, newsletter, YouTube channel, podcast, or social-media audience.
Revenue can eventually come from:
Advertising
Sponsorships
Affiliate marketing
Licensing
Memberships
Premium content
Events
Digital products
Consulting
The biggest advantage is that good content can continue attracting people after it is published.
That creates the possibility of building an audience asset rather than simply trading hours for dollars.
In my network, I have a former client that now runs a podcast studio where you can visit in Southern California and record in a professional setting.
Happy to connect you if you’re in the area and are interested in going that route.
Which Online Business Ideas Are Best for Beginners?
If you have very little money, focus on businesses where your time and existing skills are the primary startup capital.
Some of the best options include:
Freelancing
Consulting
Virtual assistance
Online tutoring
Social media management
SEO services
Digital products
Content creation
Coaching
Lead generation
These models can generally be tested without purchasing significant inventory.
Which Online Businesses Have the Highest Income Potential?
Income potential and startup difficulty are different things.
A freelance business may be easier to start than a software company, but SaaS can eventually scale much further, per experts.
Businesses with particularly strong scaling potential include:
SaaS
AI automation
Ecommerce
Digital products
Online courses
Memberships
Media businesses
Lead generation
Advertising agencies
Specialized consulting
From my experience, running an online site or blog has the greatest potential for scaling through site traffic.
The most scalable models typically have one important characteristic:
Revenue can increase without increasing labor at the same rate.
For example, selling another consulting hour requires another hour of work.
Selling another copy of a digital product doesn’t necessarily require another hour.
That’s the difference between a service business and a scalable asset.
You want ‘leveraged income‘, where you create something once and get paid multiple times for it.
I go more into depth about this business model here.
How to Start a Business Online
Finding online business ideas is the easy part.
Starting is where most people get stuck.
Here’s a practical framework for turning an idea into an actual business.
1. Choose a Specific Customer
Don’t start with:
“I want to sell online.”
Start with:
“I want to help [specific customer] solve [specific problem].”
The more specific the customer, the easier it becomes to understand their needs.
Here’s a golden egg I didn’t mention above in the list. I made my first money online reviewing independent artists’ music and uploading a media kit to my music blog.
I started by growing my followers on X and directing them to the site. Artists would then pay me to review their music on my blog, include a track, and essentially create a page they could pitch to managers or indie labels in the industry.
It helped them look more professional and they paid money to stand out.
2. Identify a Problem People Already Pay to Solve
This is one of the most important steps.
You don’t necessarily need to invent something completely new.
Look for problems that are:
Expensive
Frustrating
Time-consuming
Repetitive
Difficult
Urgent
A business can be built by making an existing process better.
3. Validate the Idea Before Spending Big
Don’t spend $10,000 building something nobody wants.
Talk to potential customers.
Search forums.
Study competitors.
Read reviews.
Look at search demand.
Ask potential buyers what they currently use and what they dislike about it.
The goal is to find evidence that the problem exists before making a major investment.
Current business-startup guidance from Shopify similarly emphasizes validating an idea, developing the offer, setting up finances, building the website, and marketing the business.
4. Create a Simple Offer
Your first offer doesn’t need to be perfect.
You need something customers understand.
For example:
“I manage social media for local restaurants for $1,000 per month.”
That’s easier to understand than:
“We provide comprehensive digital transformation solutions.”
Clarity sells.
5. Build the Minimum Viable Business
You don’t need:
A giant office
Ten employees
A complicated website
Expensive branding
50 products
A massive social following
You need a way to:
Find customers
Explain your offer
Accept payment
Deliver the product or service
Keep customers satisfied
Everything else can develop over time.
I started my first online business in my one-bedroom apartment writing artist reviews. In that same small apartment, I was dropshipping, and eventually where I started my media publication.
You don’t need to start big; you just need to start with what you have.
6. Get Your First Customers Manually
Your first customers may come from:
Friends
Family
Local businesses
Cold email
Direct messages
Networking
Referrals
Online communities
Existing professional contacts
Don’t wait for Google, TikTok, or an advertising campaign to magically deliver customers.
Go find them because they will not come to you naturally. You have to go seek them out first. Then you build systems where they come to you naturally.
7. Track the Numbers
An online business is still a business.
Track:
Revenue
Expenses
Profit
Customer acquisition cost
Average order value
Conversion rate
Customer retention
Repeat purchases
Revenue is important.
Profit is what you keep.
How Much Money Do You Need to Start an Online Business?
That depends entirely on the model.
A freelancer might begin with a laptop and internet connection.
An ecommerce business may require inventory.
A software company may require development resources.
A media company may require months or years of content production before it becomes highly profitable.
This is why “the cheapest online business” isn’t necessarily the best online business.
A better question is:
What business can I start cheaply that has enough demand to eventually become meaningful?
All I started with was a laptop. Everything else came after.
Do You Need an LLC to Start an Online Business?
Not necessarily.
The appropriate business structure depends on the business and the owner’s circumstances.
The IRS identifies several common structures, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, S corporations, and LLCs. Each can have different tax and legal considerations.
Before choosing a structure, entrepreneurs should consider their specific situation and applicable state requirements.
The IRS also notes that businesses may have obligations involving income taxes, estimated taxes, self-employment taxes, employment taxes, and other taxes depending on the business.
What Is the Best Online Business to Start in 2026?
There isn’t one answer.
The best online business depends on what you already know, how much money you have available, how quickly you need revenue, and whether you want to build a service business or a scalable asset.
For someone who needs income quickly, a service business may be the better starting point.
For someone willing to build for years, software, ecommerce, media, digital products, or memberships may offer greater long-term scalability.
And there’s another option that entrepreneurs sometimes overlook:
Build one business that finances the next.
You don’t have to bet everything on one idea.
You can start with freelancing, use the profits to build a digital product, use that audience to launch a membership, and eventually develop a larger company around the ecosystem.
That’s often a more realistic path than trying to create a million-dollar company on day one.
My original blog did not grow into a media publication with millions of readers overnight. I created multiple online businesses over the years to identify which model I wanted to scale.
Try what interests you the most and learn from it.
The Biggest Mistake When Starting an Online Business
The biggest mistake isn’t choosing the “wrong” business idea.
It’s spending months researching online business ideas without actually testing one.
There will always be another opportunity.
Another trend.
Another AI tool.
Another business model.
Another YouTube video claiming that a certain side hustle is generating $50,000 a month.
Meanwhile, someone else is talking to customers, making offers, learning what works, and improving their business.
Execution creates information that research cannot.
Pick a reasonable idea. Test it. Get feedback. Make your first sale.
Improve the offer. Then scale what works.
When I started my independent artist review blog, I got the idea randomly one night while I was promoting my OWN music.
I was building a following on X so that I could eventually distribute my songs, then the thought of distributing other artists music came to me.
Within a week of building a free website on Wix and simply putting my plan into action, I had made my first $100 online.
You just need to take action. Every second and every minute in your entrepreneurial journey counts.
Final Thoughts
The best online business ideas aren’t necessarily the newest ones.
They’re businesses that solve real problems for people who are willing to pay.
In 2026, entrepreneurs can choose from an unusually broad range of models—from freelancing and consulting to ecommerce, digital products, AI automation, software, lead generation, and media, like me.
But the business model is only the beginning.
The real advantage comes from building something useful, finding a specific audience, earning trust, and consistently improving your offer.
If you’re serious about learning how to start a business online, don’t spend another six months searching for the perfect idea.
Choose one. Validate it. Launch it.
And let the market tell you what to do next. You can read more on entrepreneurship here and follow my journey making nearly a million dollars online.
