An unexpected wave of layoffs now hits Pennsylvania for 2024 according to the latest business WARN filings advising of upcoming job cuts.

Last year, almost 70 companies declared widespread layoffs in Pennsylvania leading to more than 9,000 people losing their job.

WARN notices jumped sharply last year.

In 2022, there were just 45 notices filed in Pennsylvania.

It’s important to note that under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, an employer with more than 100 full-time workers must provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more people at a single site.

Below is a list of businesses that filed WARN notices advising of upcoming layoffs in Pennsylvania for 2024:

  • Hood Packaging Corporation. 58 job cuts by 1/14/2024.
  • Eagle Sight Delivery, LLC. 55 job cuts by 1/30/2024.
  • Vitro Flay Glass, LLC. 88 job cuts by 1/15/2024.
  • RE2, LLC/Sarcos Corp. 73 job cuts by 1/16/2024.
  • Silgan Plastics. Job cuts unspecified by 4/26/2024.

Last year, the following companies advised of job cuts in Pennsylvania during the fourth quarter:

  • WABTEC Corporation. 94 job cuts filed 12/1.
  • United States Steel Corporation. 105 job cuts filed 11/1.
  • NextGen Healthcare, Inc. 65 job cuts filed 11/1.
  • Vitro Flay Glass, LLC. 88 job cuts by 1/15/2024.
  • Saks, LLC. 90 job cuts filed 11/1.
  • Eagle Sight Delivery, LLC. 55 job cuts by 1/30/2024.
  • American Medical Response Mid-Atlantic, Inc. 152 job cuts filed 11/1.
  • RE2, LLC/Sarcos Corp. 73 job cuts by 1/16/2024.
  • Hood Packaging Corporation. 58 job cuts by 1/14/2024.
  • Dan Schantz Farm & Greenhouses, LLC (UPDATED). 120 job cuts filed 10/1.
  • VSSI Staffing Services, LLC. 180 job cuts filed 10/1.
  • Matheson Flight Extenders, Inc. 75 job cuts filed 10/1.
  • Assurant. 442 job cuts filed 10/1.

California remains the #1 state with the most layoffs in the country.

In second place is New York followed by Texas, Washington, New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, and Georgia.

A popular store now closes in Illinois after 25 years according to the company’s latest social media post.

Barnes & Nobles has announced its latest book store closure in Illinois after a solid 25 years.

“We’ve found a new home! We must leave this store, and the new bookstore will be located a short distance away at the Prairie Market Shopping Center (2590 US Highway 34, Oswego, IL 60543), next to Best Buy and Near Ulta Beauty and Kohl’s,” the company said in a statement.

“The new location offer us a huge opportunity to feature our highly lauded new store design.

Our shelves will be stocked with all the bestsellers and hidden gems you know and love – our world-class book selection, the best toys and games, expansive vinyl collection, and more.

We can’t wait for you to see our unique new design features and updates B& N Café.

It has truly been our honor and privilege to be your book seller in Naperville for the last 25 years.

While we’re saddened to vacate our current home, we are so excited to stay nearby and in a beautiful new bookstore.”

Many booklovers who have been visiting the area for years now have expressed their disappointment on social media.

“I never thought I’d see the day B&N left that amazing location in downtown Naperville. It’s so sad.”

“This is a huge loss for Naperville. Downtown will never be the same.”

“Downtown Napes won’t be the same without y’all.”

Some complained that the ‘short distance’ to the new location wasn’t so short.

“A short distance, lol. It’s a 25-minute drive from the old location.”

“That’s not a short distance at all!”
