A grocery store with 330 locations now makes an unexpected closure after 31 years of serving its community, creating a ‘food desert’.
The closure of a ShopRite in New York will leave shoppers in a food desert, forcing them to drive farther to buy groceries, per The U.S. Sun.
In October 2023, ShopRite announced it would be shuttering several stores in New York, per Hudson Valley Country.
One such location is the ShopRite on Route 209 in the town of Wawarsing, New York, which is set to close in late August.
Location at 1 Shoprite Blvd, Ellenville – around 100 miles from New York City – the beloved supermarket in the Hudson Valley region is closing due to an expiring lease.
It is just one of over 12 ShopRites set to close in the area.
When ShopRite closes its doors this summer, it will leave Wawarsing and Ellenville without a full-service grocery store.
The nearest stores are Walmart and Pete’s Groceries in Napanoch, New York.
Wawarsing’s supervisor, Terry Houck, felt the situation was unacceptable.
“We need to continue to have a full-line grocery store.
We need it for the residents and the employees that work there,” he said.
Senator Peter Oberacker agreed, noting the problem with food deserts in the area.
“Too many of our rural communities have morphed into food deserts with a lack of shopping options for families and individuals,” he began.
“In my discussions with local elected officials and residents, it’s abundantly clear that there is a need for a community grocery store in the Town of Wawarsing.”
Opened in 1993, the Wawarsing ShopRite has been one of the few supermarkets in the region for the last 31 years.
Because of the scarcity of food options, local town officials are presently working with the plaza owners, SR Equity Partners, to ensure a new store replaces the ShopRite promptly.
Houck shared that the town and the Senator conversed with plaza owners on how they can quickly bring a new supermarket to shoppers.

“As part of the store closures, TGI Fridays is offering more than 1,000 transfer opportunities, which represents over 80% of total impacted employees,” the company previously said in a statement.
“Our top priority has always been delivering a superior experience for each and every TGI Fridays guest, and we’ve identified opportunities to optimize and streamline our operations to ensure we are best positioned to meet – and exceed – on that brand promise,” said Ray Risley, US president and chief operating officer, in the release.
Eight other locations were sold to former CEO Ray Blanchette, a longtime stakeholder who will acquire the previously corporate-owned restaurants.
