Upcoming layoffs in Washington now grow prior to the holidays as new businesses file WARN acts advising of job cuts.
It’s important to note that under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, an employer with more than 100 full-time workers must provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more people at a single site.
VMware is the latest business to file a notice with the Washington Employment Security Department.
The company advised on Monday that 158 staff at its office in Bellevue will be laid off on January 26.
Employees learned yesterday that their positions would be eliminated due to the company being acquired by Broadcom.
Broadcom closed its $69 billion acquisition of VMware on November 22.
The company released the following statement:
“Broadcom recently completed its acquisition of VMware.
As part of integration planning and following an organizational needs assessment, we identified go-forward roles that will be required within the combined company.
We regret to inform you that your position is being eliminated, and your employment will be terminated.
We would like to thank you for your dedication and service. [Furthermore] We want to make this transition as smooth as possible, including offering you a generous severance package and providing you a non-working paid notice period.”
The following businesses have also advised of upcoming layoffs in Washington:
- Flexe, Inc. 131 job cuts as of 11/27.
- Hard Rock International (USA), Inc. 66 job cuts by 12/01.
- HMSHost. 65 job cuts by 12/31.
- Target. 51 job cuts by 12/30.
- Magnum Venus Products. 47 job cuts by 12/30.
- American Nursery Services. 45 job cuts by 12/31.
- Crothall Healthcare, Inc. 41 job cuts by 12/14.
- Target. 39 job cuts by 12/30.
- Alpha Technologies Services, Inc. 77 job cuts by 1/17/2024.
- Nordstrom Quality Center. 67 job cuts by 2/01/2024.
- Americal Medical Response Moses Lake. 17 job cuts by 1/02/2024.
So far in 2023, there has been approximately 18,254 layoffs in Washington across 62 businesses according to the latest WARN data.
California remains the #1 state with the most layoffs in the country.
In second place is New York followed by Colorado, Illinois, Texas, Washington, New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, and Georgia.

Other Economy News Today
A massive company in California is now laying off hundreds according to the latest WARN filings and reports.
Matheson Flight Extenders (MFE), a mail processing, transportation, and logistics contractor, says it will be laying off a whopping 450 employees in December as it closes its mail sorting facilities in California.
It’s important to note that under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, an employer with more than 100 full-time workers must provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more people at a single site.
Matheson Flight Extenders has reported 3 WARN notices with the California Employment Development Department advising of upcoming job cuts.
Here are the locations being affected:
- 72 employees being laid off at the facility in San Leandro
- 124 workers losing their jobs across two centers in Sacramento
- 257 workers permanently laid off at a Long Beach facility
MFE has been providing services to the Postal Service since December 1998 but has recently cut jobs in several states following a dispute with the US Postal Service, reports Ash Jurberg.
Last week, the following three companies also filed WARN Act notices with the California Employment Development Department, advising of layoffs prior to the holidays:
- Surefox North America who are laying off 386 staff on December 18 in Sunnyvale and Mountain View.
- Arden Hills Country Club will be laying off 33 staff in Sacramento on December 31.
- Kitayama Brothers are laying off 53 staff in Watsonville on December 23.
There has been approximately 67,274 layoffs in California across 1,206 businesses according to the latest WARN data.
California currently ranks as the #1 state with the most layoffs in the country.
In second place is New York followed by Colorado, Illinois, Texas, Washington, New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, and Georgia.
