An Iconic Hotel Now Announces An Unexpected Closure

An iconic hotel now announces an unexpected closure at a historic location after 40 years in business, sources report.

The Woodcliff Lake Hilton in Bergen County, New Jersey, is closing after nearly 40 years in business, reports The-Sun.

The local landmark will shut down on February 26, according to ABC’s local affiliate, WABC.

Hilton’s departure marks the second major hotel shutdown in the area this winter.

Back in December, Sheraton Crossroads in nearby Mahwah closed.

The hotels both served as major event-hosting spaces in the area, and their shutdowns have left some searching for a last minute space to host.

The Woodcliff Lake Hilton was set to host the Mahwah junior formal dance in march, and the abrupt closure forced them to move the school event, according to WABC.

Republican State Senator Holly Schepisi told the local press she blamed pandemic shutdowns for the downturn in Hilton’s success in the area.

“I grew up here, spent my teen years going to events,” Schepisi said.

“I had my Sweet 16 there.”

She wasn’t the only one with memories in the hotel, reports The-Sun.

“So happy we got to have our 50th reunion there. Sad to see it go,” one member of Ridgewood High School’s class of 1973 said on Facebook.

“So sad! I always loved it there,” another Facebook user commented.

Local event spaces were already in short supply after the area’s Sheraton closed.

A major auto club is now in search of a place to hold its annual car show.

“We’re scrambling,” Jeff Bornstein of the ‘Dean Man’s Curve’ car club told WABC.

The hotel’s property has already been sold to a developer and is expected to be turned into a housing complex.

A supermarket with 200 stores is now closing for good next month after rumors circulated from staffers, sources report.

The Weis Markets store in Binghamton, New York state, will be permanently closing its doors in about one month, reports The-Sun.

News of the closure comes after staffers had reportedly heard speculation that the store could be at risk of shutting down, per the radio station WNBF.

Shoppers are worried how the pending store closure will impact the local area, while others fear for the future of retail.

“Pretty soon the only way to get groceries will be to order them online.

There won’t be a store to go to, just like with everything else,” a shopper said.

“This is too bad. It’s convenient to shop there for us for last-minute stuff,” another commented.

Shoppers fear the closure may cause a grocery store desert.

“That store is never empty and there’s no other grocery store near it… How in the heck can they justify shutting it down?” a shopper lamented.

“This is going to be a hardship on a lot of people in that neighborhood.”

Shoppers have described the closure an awful idea.

Workers impacted by the closure will be able to transfer to other Weis stores.

Weis Markets has a portfolio of 200 stores across seven states, including New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The grocer is not the only chain that has announced recent store closures.

A Walgreens store in Midtown, Manhattan will also be closing down for good in just weeks.

The store’s last day of business will be February 20.
