A massive retailer now closes at an Alabama mall, leaving fans nearly 70 miles away from the closes store, sources report.
Popular ‘meme stock’ and gaming retailer GameStop has closed down another store, with gamers in the area left traveling elsewhere for their favorite titles.
It was seemingly the last GameStop in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, about 69 miles west of Huntsville, that remained open in the city.
The store was located within Southgate Mall and is now indefinitely closed, per GameStop’s website.
Fans also noted recently that they’d arrived at the shopping center to find it shuttered after heading there only weeks earlier.
“The larger store in MS is closed,” customer Jo Hanson wrote in a thread on Facebook.
Jo and several others noted that the nearest location for Muscle Shoals gamers would be in Florence, about 10 minutes north of the axed Southgate Mall store.
“I believe the muscle shoals location closed but the Florence one is still open!” exclaimed another shopper.
A third included a screenshot of the Florence location being open through Google Maps to confirm.
GameStop has around 2,900 locations in the United States, per data collected by Statista.
The majority are located in California, Florida, and Texas.
Texas has the most at 300 stores, California has 263, and Florida stands at 190.
Over the past few years, the retailer has been shutting down stores periodically.
Last August, GameStop closed another staple store for gamers in the Clay, New York area, about 14 miles north of Syracuse.
It was in business for years before the sign was removed and shelves were emptied, Syarcuse.com reported.
Between 2021 and 2022, GameStop also shuttered at least 243 stores.
Still, GameStop seems to be bouncing back with steady profits in 2023 and 2024 after recording a $147.5 million loss in March 2022, per an earnings report from that time.
CEO Matt Furlong stressed that “GameStop is a much healthier business today than it was at the start of 2021,” in an earnings call last year.
