A restaurant chain now makes an unexpected closure in Missouri marking the end of an era for the brand’s presence in the Kansas City area.
Chuy’s has closed on the Country Club Plaza.
The Tex-Mex chain’s last day of service at 209 W. 46th Terrace was Saturday, reports The Kansas City Star.
“We have permanently closed this location and apologize for any inconvenience,” read a sign posted on the door Sunday.
“We appreciate all our customers and their loyalty to this Chuy’s for so many years.”
A similar voice message greets callers to the restaurant’s phone number.
Junk King trucks were parked outside the restaurant Monday morning, with movers loading up furniture and decor.
Chuy’s opened in the former Figlio space on the Plaza in 2013, its first area location.
The restaurant serves fajitas, enchiladas, “big as yo’ face” burritos, and house specialties like the Chuychanga and the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo (Chuy’s ramshackle interior design features shrines to the King.).
An Olathe location opened in 2017 and closed in 2019, and an Overland Park location opened in 2018 and closed during the early days of the pandemic.
Chuy’s first started in Austin in 1982.
It was sold to a private equity firm in 2006 and began to expand outside Texas in the late 2000s.
The company has 102 locations in the U.S., according to its most recent investor presentation.

Before the closures, TGI Fridays had about 270 US locations, according to the company’s website.
“As part of the store closures, TGI Fridays is offering more than 1,000 transfer opportunities, which represents over 80% of total impacted employees,” the company previously said in a statement.
“Our top priority has always been delivering a superior experience for each and every TGI Fridays guest, and we’ve identified opportunities to optimize and streamline our operations to ensure we are best positioned to meet – and exceed – on that brand promise,” said Ray Risley, US president and chief operating officer, in the release.
Eight other locations were sold to former CEO Ray Blanchette, a longtime stakeholder who will acquire the previously corporate-owned restaurants.
The sale comes as major changes have been made to the brand’s leadership, including the news of Weldon Spangler being made CEO.
