Tony Evers now shares his disappointment with business layoffs in Wisconsin as new companies file WARN notices advising of more upcoming job cuts.
This month, a total of ten businesses either laid off starting in December or warned of layoffs in Wisconsin going into 2025.
It’s important to note that under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, employers with more than 100 full-time employees are required to provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more workers at a single location.
This law aims to protect employees by ensuring they have adequate time to prepare for the transition and seek new employment opportunities.
Among the businesses that have filed WARN notices with the state of Wisconsin, some are major employers in their respective industries, including:
- Barko Hydraulics, LLC. 57 job cuts by 12/1.
- Advance Stores Co Inc. 51 job cuts by 1/27/2025.
- Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation (WPS). 313 job cuts by 1/21/2025.
- Hultafors Group North America, LLC. 45 job cuts by 3/28/2025.
- Molson Coors Beverage Company USA. 34 job cuts by 1/17/2025 (Milwaukee).
- Molson Coors Beverage Company USA. 56 job cuts by 1/17/2025 (Chippewa).
- Packers Sanitation Services Inc Ltd. 83 job cuts by 12/31.
- National Regency of New Berlin Inc. 279 job cuts by 12/31.
- J BAUER TRUCKING. 64 job cuts by 12/31.
- ALCOM LLC. 113 job cuts by 1/12/2025.
- Solina USA. 88 job cuts by 12/20.
Governor Tony Evers has made several comments throughout the year regarding layoffs in Wisconsin.
Evers expressed his disappointment with the Hospital Sisters Health System and Prevea Health for not providing adequate notice about the impending layoffs.
He stated that both the employees and his administration were not informed in a timely manner, which he deemed “wrong”.
Evers assured that local and state efforts are in place to assist laid-off workers in finding new employment.
This includes organizing a community job fair focused on health care
Evers’ comments also touched on the legal obligations of employers regarding layoff notifications.
He noted that there are laws requiring employers to provide at least 60 days of pay and benefits to employees affected by layoffs, and he emphasized the importance of adhering to these regulations.
