Gas prices are nearing their highest levels this year after the national average rose another $0.03 overnight.
The nationwide average price is currently sitting at $4.46 per gallon. California, Washington, and Hawaii currently hold the record for the states with the highest gas prices in the United States.
In areas like California, the average price is $6.14 per gallon while Washington’s is $5.56. And in Hawaii, gas prices average around $5.52 per gallon.
Friday’s price sits just 10 cents below the highest-level hit earlier this year, on May 21, when the national average was $4.56 per gallon.
They’re also not that far out from their all-time highest level of $5.01, which was reached in June 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine.
But six states currently have an average gas price of over $5, with California gas prices being the highest in the country.
Other states with high gas prices include Michigan, Utah, and Illinois.

Why are gas prices so high?
Gas prices overall have risen 50% nationwide since the U.S. and Israel attached Iran on February 28.
The price of diesel has also risen, hitting new all-time highs since it’s $6 per gallon on September 11.
As of Friday, the national average price of diesel was $6.44 after it rose 5 cents overnight.
