A popular grocery chain now makes an unexpected closure in North Carolina after announcing a major location would shutter for good.
The Carlie C’s IGA store on Garner Station Boulevard made the announcement just two days before beginning the closing process.
The locally-owned grocery chain, with over 30 locations across the Carolinas, now has one less store under its portfolio.
And many customers aren’t taking the news well, with some questioning whether there’s something else behind the store’s abrupt closure.
“What is the deal with the landlord all of a sudden canceling a lease?” one user asked.
“Of course, I am referring to Ragazzi’s which went through the same thing recently.
And now Carlie C’s!
Makes you wonder what the landlord has planned,” they added.
“This is gonna be a great loss to that area,” wrote another user.
Employees were notified of the closure at 1514 Garner Station Blvd in Raleigh on April 18, marketing director Malia Allen told The News & Observer.
The location began shutting down immediately, with staff moving out inventory and discounting groceries on April 22.
According to The News & Observer, the store’s closing would depend on how quickly groceries and inventory were sold.
An announcement of the closing came after the building’s landlord said they were canceling the lease, per a Facebook post by Carlie C’s IGA.
Carlie C’s IGA said despite the closure, it’s still committed to its employees and community.
“All affected full-time employees will be offered positions at other Carlie C’s IGA locations, ensuring continuity of employment and support during this transition period,” said the store on Facebook.
The grocer said it’s still “look[ing] forward to serving customers at [its] nearby stores on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh and in Angier.”
“This is the second store closed,” wrote one Facebook user on the post, to which the Carlie C’s replied, “Yes, we closed our College St. location earlier this year.”
The store said that it has “no intentions of closing any more stores anytime in the near future” and shut the doors of its College St. location for the same reason — it also rented but didn’t own, the space, reported The News & Observer.

A massive shoe retailer now announces a new wave of layoffs to hit headquarters this summer, affecting over 700 employees.
Nike has announced its ‘second phase’ of mass layoffs, effective June 28, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing.
A total of 740 employees will be impacted in the retailer’s home state.
The layoffs are part of the 2% workforce reduction Nike announced in February, which is taking place across two phases, the company confirmed via email.
Nike said job titles and the number of employees in each category would be provided at a later date, once the company has determined them.
Bumping rights are not available for the impacted employees, reports Retail Dive.
“Nike’s always at our best when we’re on the offense. The actions that we’re taking put us in the position to right-size our organization to get after our biggest growth opportunities as interest in sport, health and wellness have never been stronger,” Nike said in a statement.
“While these changes will impact approximately 2% of our total workforce, we are grateful for the contributions made by all Nike teammates.”
The layoffs are tied to a cost-savings plan Nike unveiled in December, which is aimed at generating up to $2 billion in cumulative savings over three years.
Based on the company’s last annual report, the layoffs to 2% of its total workforce will impact more than 1,600 people.
Savings from the plan are set to be reinvested in driving growth, innovation and profitability.
