A Massive Discount Grocery Chain is Now Having Closing Sales

A massive discount grocery chain is now having closing sales of up to 20% off as shoppers are met with closing signs nationwide.

The Save-a-lot on Buffalo’s eastside is set to close next week, leaving customers with limited shopping options.

Located in Broadway Market, the discount grocer is covered with handwritten closing signs alerting shoppers of the news.

Some say “Store closing” and others read “Save-A-Lot 20% off,” per local NBC affiliate WGRZ.

Multiple Family Dollars recently closed in the area, leaving residents with even fewer shopping options, reports The-Sun.

After the Save-a-lot shutters, only two major grocers will remain in Buffalo’s Eastside — an Aldi across the street and Tops Friendly Markets on Jefferson Ave.

The U.S. Sun reports that it has reached out to Save-a-lot and confirmed the sales and closure date.

The Save-a-lot was forced to close after a series of financial blows.

“Everything went downhill after we got looted,” store owner Ron Horrigan told Buffalo News, referring to incidents in December 2022.

Store insurance had a $5,000 deductible that didn’t cover cleanup and restocking, and by earlier this year, the store’s customer count had dropped by half.

Horrigan also shared that the discontinuation of the pandemic’s food benefits increase led to a drop in sales.

At the same time, theft, minimum wage, and the cost of having food delivered to the store by suppliers have risen, with the latter up by $21,000.

On top of that, Horrigan is six months late on the Save-a-lot’s rent.

The store owner met with Mayor Byron Brown in search of financial assistance but was told the store’s sales were too high to qualify for grocery grants.

“The city, they all cry when somebody leaves. ‘Oh, it’s a food desert. Nobody’s coming in.’ Well they don’t do nothing when somebody’s going out, neither,” said Horrigan.

Many shoppers were saddened by Save-a-lot’s impending closure.

TGI Fridays is closing a total of seven restaurants in one state as part of the company’s ongoing growth strategy.

This comes after the chain abruptly closed 36 locations across 12 states in at the beginning of the year, per The-Sun.

The restaurant chain will pull the plug on seven locations across the state of New Jersey in the coming weeks.

Today, Fridays will welcome in famished diners at its location in Brick for the final time.

“As we continue along our path of transformation to revitalize the Fridays brand and implement a long-term growth strategy, we see a bright future for TGI Fridays,” said Weldon Spangler, CEO of TGI Fridays earlier this week.

“We are at the helm of a pivotal moment that will allow us to explore boundless advancement, expansion, and innovation to keep delivering ‘That Fridays Feeling’ that our fans know and love.”

Before the closures, TGI Fridays had about 270 US locations, according to the company’s website.

“As part of the store closures, TGI Fridays is offering more than 1,000 transfer opportunities, which represents over 80% of total impacted employees,” the company previously said in a statement.

“Our top priority has always been delivering a superior experience for each and every TGI Fridays guest, and we’ve identified opportunities to optimize and streamline our operations to ensure we are best positioned to meet – and exceed – on that brand promise,” said Ray Risley, US president and chief operating officer, in the release.

Eight other locations were sold to former CEO Ray Blanchette, a longtime stakeholder who will acquire the previously corporate-owned restaurants.

The sale comes as major changes have been made to the brand’s leadership, including the news of Weldon Spangler being made CEO.

“As we continue along our path of transformation to revitalize the Fridays brand and implement a long-term growth strategy, we see a bright future for TGI Fridays,” said Spangler in a statement.
