A surprising restaurant now confirms the closure of 25 locations with the strong possibility of more shuttering later this year.
Applebee’s customers say they weren’t surprised to hear that a specific location shut down after the CFO announced that 25 to 30 restaurants would close this year.
Vance Yuwen Chen, CFO of Dine Brands Global, which owns Applebee’s and IHOP, first announced upcoming closures in February, earlier this year.
However, Applebee’s president, Tony Moralejo, stressed that the closures aren’t due to struggling business but rather a result of a new development structure.
Regardless of how the company has framed it, customers have their own ideas about why restaurants are shutting down.
After an Applebee’s closed in Eastgate, Ohio, near Cincinnati, diners said they weren’t surprised.
“Saw that coming,” wrote one person in response to a Facebook post announcing the closure.
“Service wasn’t the best, and the location couldn’t be worse.”
“The service was horrible the last time we were there,” added another former customer.
“They weren’t busy at all.”
“Applebee’s has gone downhill in the last few years,” wrote a third person.
“We used to eat there a lot, but not so much anymore.”
Another Applebee’s location shut down in New York on May 19, reports The-Sun.
The restaurant had been a staple in the Hudson Valley area for 15 years, per ABC affiliate WTEN.
“We hope to see you at our neighboring restaurants throughout the Albany and Hudson Valley markets,” a spokesperson from T.L. Cannon told The Daily Gazette.
Local diners were caught off guard by the news and said they were sad to see the restaurant shut down.
“We’ve never had a bad experience there and the staff was always so friendly and always good service!” one customer said.
Just weeks before that, another Applebee’s closed in Waco, Texas.
Guests found out from a note taped to the door that announced the closure.
“From April 29th, 2024, this Applebee’s is closed,” it said.
“We regret any inconvenience it has caused our valued guests.”

TGI Fridays is closing a total of seven restaurants in one state as part of the company’s ongoing growth strategy.
This comes after the chain abruptly closed 36 locations across 12 states in at the beginning of the year, per The-Sun.
The restaurant chain will pull the plug on seven locations across the state of New Jersey in the coming weeks.
Today, Fridays will welcome in famished diners at its location in Brick for the final time.
“As we continue along our path of transformation to revitalize the Fridays brand and implement a long-term growth strategy, we see a bright future for TGI Fridays,” said Weldon Spangler, CEO of TGI Fridays earlier this week.
“We are at the helm of a pivotal moment that will allow us to explore boundless advancement, expansion, and innovation to keep delivering ‘That Fridays Feeling’ that our fans know and love.”
Before the closures, TGI Fridays had about 270 US locations, according to the company’s website.
“As part of the store closures, TGI Fridays is offering more than 1,000 transfer opportunities, which represents over 80% of total impacted employees,” the company previously said in a statement.
“Our top priority has always been delivering a superior experience for each and every TGI Fridays guest, and we’ve identified opportunities to optimize and streamline our operations to ensure we are best positioned to meet – and exceed – on that brand promise,” said Ray Risley, US president and chief operating officer, in the release.
Eight other locations were sold to former CEO Ray Blanchette, a longtime stakeholder who will acquire the previously corporate-owned restaurants.
The sale comes as major changes have been made to the brand’s leadership, including the news of Weldon Spangler being made CEO.
“As we continue along our path of transformation to revitalize the Fridays brand and implement a long-term growth strategy, we see a bright future for TGI Fridays,” said Spangler in a statement.
