Wells Fargo Says It’s Closing Another Major Branch

Wells Fargo says it is closing another major branch after the U.S. bank giant has been trimming branch locations over past recent years.

The latest Wells Fargo bank branch closure is taking place on October 7, 2026, in Born Air, Virginia.

According to locals, it means the next Wells Fargo branches will be within a few additional miles.

Why is Wells Fargo increasingly closing its bank branches?

This isn’t new in retail banking. Online banking is changing the way Americans bank.

Wells Fargo says their focus is based on this changing landscape.

“As we optimize our branch network, we are focused on enhancing our branch presence based on customer demand and changes to the retail landscape to best meet the banking needs of each community we serve.”

While Wells Fargo has been axing branch locations across the United States, it is also making major upgrades to high-performing branches.

The bank has been undergoing a multi-year revamp plan, with over 700 locations being upgraded this year, including in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Dallas.

“Branches will be made to feel more like hospitality spaces, with new technology set to streamline services,” says TheSun.

What Customers Are Saying About Wells Fargo Bank Branches Closing

Customers aren’t happy about the Wells Fargo bank branch closures.

California resident Darnold Brophy said, “It’s the only Wells Fargo up here, we need this bank, and there’s really good people who work in there.”

“There’s a lot of older people out here, and they like talking.

They’re not good with technology and stuff like that.

So it affects people like them. A lot of people are bummed out,” said Riley Nance, another California resident.

The bank branch closures affect mainly older generations who are accustomed to visiting physical locations for their deposits and withdrawal needs.

It’s the younger generations who are using online mobile banking.

Zelle and other payment apps have grown in the retail banking space.

Users are able to send payment instantly. And with mobile check depositing capabilities, users can deposit their paychecks from the comfort of their home.

In the U.S., 54% of bank customers use mobile apps as their top option for managing accounts, according to data from the American Bankers Association (ABA).

22% use online banking via laptop or PC more often.

The next most popular banking methods include visiting a branch (9%), ATMs (6%) and telephone calls (4%).

Gen Z and Millennials are the highest users of online banking.

According to the report, about two-thirds of Generation Z (63%) and Millennials (67%) use mobile banking apps most often, while more than half of Generation X (56%) do so.

For the first time in the history of the survey, Baby Boomers said they use mobile banking apps the most (38%), while the percentage that said they primarily utilize online banking via laptop or PC to manage their accounts dipped from 41% in 2024 to 35% in 2025.

ABA says when it comes to physical bank branches, about 1 in 8 Baby Boomers (12%) visit locations the most often, while only 3% of Gen Z prefer to visit a branch.

“America’s banks are investing in innovation to meet their customers wherever they are,” said ABA President and CEO Rob Nichols.

“Whether you are on your way to work in a big city, checking crops on the family farm or spending time at home with friends and family, you’re always connected to your bank these days.

This survey shows that Americans appreciate the convenience and safety that comes with their bank account.”
