JUST IN: Two girls, ages 3 and 4 have been killed in a DUI crash in Rialto, California after their vehicle was struck by a drunk 28-year-old driver.
A heartbreaking incident occurred Sunday night in Rialto, California, when two young girls, ages 3 and 4, lost their lives after the vehicle they were in was struck by a suspected drunk driver.
The Rialto Police Department reported that the tragic crash took place just after 11 p.m. at the intersection of Walnut and Riverside avenues.
According to Sgt. Daniel Smith of the Rialto Police Department, the girls were riding in a white Honda Accord with their parents when the accident happened.
The family was making a left turn onto Walnut Avenue when the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck, identified as 28-year-old Alexis Garcia from San Bernardino, reportedly ran a red light and collided with the Accord.
The force of the impact caused the Honda to spin and crash into a nearby tow truck, leading to devastating consequences.
Tragically, the two toddlers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Police confirmed that both children were secured in car seats; however, one of the girls was ejected from the vehicle during the collision.
The girls’ father suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital, while their mother fortunately emerged unharmed.
Following the crash, Garcia fled the scene but was later located by authorities.
He had a passenger in his truck at the time of the incident, but that individual was not injured and was not taken into custody.
Garcia has been arrested on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, one count of driving under the influence (DUI), and one count of felony hit-and-run.
After receiving treatment at the hospital, he is expected to be booked into the West Valley Detention Center.
The incident has left the community in shock, as the loss of two young lives has sparked an outpouring of grief and concern.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, and they urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
