Santa Clara, CA- New charges for man in notorious “Gone Girl” kidnapping case have been made as new allegations have been made.
A man implicated in the infamous “Gone Girl” kidnapping of a Northern California woman has been charged with two additional sexual assaults from 15 years ago, according to prosecutors.
Matthew Muller, 47, already serving a 40-year prison sentence for the 2015 kidnapping, faces serious new allegations involving home invasions that occurred in 2009.
Details of the Allegations
Prosecutors allege that Muller broke into a woman’s home in Mountain View, California, in September 2009.
During this invasion, he attacked the woman, bound her, and forced her to ingest medication.
Despite threatening to assault her, the victim managed to persuade Muller to relent.
Before leaving, he ominously suggested that she should get a dog for her protection.
Just a month later, Muller allegedly struck again in Palo Alto.
In this instance, he bound and gagged another woman, forcing her to consume Nyquil before initiating an assault.
Similar to the previous victim, she too was able to convince him to stop.
Potential Consequences
Muller has now been charged with two felony counts for committing sexual assault during these home invasions.
If convicted, he could face life in prison.
District Attorney Jeff Rosen emphasized the gravity of Muller’s actions, stating, “The details of this person’s violent crime spree seem scripted for Hollywood, but they are tragically real. Our goal is to ensure this defendant is held accountable and will never hurt or terrorize anyone ever again.“
Evidence and Legal Proceedings
The new charges arose from recent evidence testing based on a “new lead.”
Authorities discovered Muller’s DNA on the straps used to bind one of the victims, linking him directly to these crimes.
Muller, a disbarred attorney with a Harvard education, had previously pleaded guilty to the kidnapping of Denise Huskins in 2015.
He was sentenced in 2022 to an additional 31 years in state prison after pleading no contest to two counts of forcible rape related to the Huskins case.
The “Gone Girl” Incident
In the high-profile case, Denise Huskins was abducted by a masked intruder who entered her boyfriend’s home in Vallejo, California.
Her boyfriend, Aaron Quinn, recounted waking up to bright lights and finding himself and Huskins drugged and tied up.
The kidnappers demanded an $8,500 ransom.
Following her abduction, Vallejo police publicly suggested that Huskins and Quinn had fabricated the kidnapping, comparing it to the plot of the novel and film “Gone Girl.”
This accusation came despite Huskins being found unharmed two days later, just hours before the ransom was due.
Initially, police dismissed the couple’s claims, but the narrative changed when Muller was apprehended for a similar crime.
Investigators linked him to the kidnapping through evidence found during a search of his car and home, including stolen items from Quinn.
As Muller faces these new charges, the hope is that justice will be served for his many victims.
The community continues to grapple with the disturbing reality of his violent acts, and the legal system seeks to ensure that he will never have the opportunity to harm anyone again.
