Major US Banks Are Now Launching a Stablecoin by 2027

Major US banks such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citi are launching a stablecoin by 2027 tied to the U.S. dollar.

Capital One, Goldman Sachs, and PNC are also joining in.

The stablecoin is expected to go to market during the first half of 2027.

Other banks committed to the project include TD Bank, Scotiabank, UBS, Santander, BBVA, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Lloyds, Crédit Agricole, Rabobank and MUFG, according to a Tuesday release posted on Wells Fargo’s website.

“The new company, whose name will be announced in due course, intends to operate globally, with its initial focus on a USD‑denominated stablecoin offering and a longer‑term ambition of expanding issuance into stablecoins denominated in additional G7 currencies, with a EUR offering as a priority,” Wells Fargo said in a statement.

What is a Stablecoin in Crypto?

Think of a stablecoin as a digital dollar.

Imagine you have a $100 bill.

A dollar stablecoin is essentially:

$1 of digital money that is designed to remain worth $1.

Instead of the $100 sitting in your physical wallet or traditional bank account, you have 100 digital tokens on a blockchain.

The crucial difference from Bitcoin is that Bitcoin’s price moves:

  • Bitcoin → $50,000 → $70,000 → $90,000 → $60,000
  • Dollar stablecoin → $1 → $1 → $1 → $1

The idea is that the issuer holds reserves—such as cash, bank deposits or U.S. Treasury securities—to support the tokens.

Why would a stablecoin be useful?

Traditional banking isn’t actually very fast.

If you send money through the traditional financial system, there can be:

  • banks
  • payment processors
  • clearing systems
  • business hours
  • international intermediaries
  • settlement periods

A blockchain can operate 24/7/365.

The Federal Reserve describes payment stablecoins as potentially enabling instant peer-to-peer dollar payments around the clock.

This is where crypto tokens like XRP then become more useful and valuable.

If Bank of America has digital dollars, a Japanese institution has digital yen, and another institution has tokenized securities, the big question becomes:

How do all these different systems move value between one another?

That’s where XRP’s thesis comes in.

The XRP Ledger was specifically designed around fast settlement and exchanging different forms of value, and Ripple is actively positioning XRPL for institutional tokenization and payments.

“The initiative will draw on the expertise of the participant institutions to offer a safe, robust and trusted solution that combines bank‑grade compliance, strong governance, distribution and institutional risk management,” Wells Fargo said.

“The product will be utilised [UK spelling] in a variety of use cases covering wholesale, institutional and retail markets where client benefits can be achieved by utilising a trusted form of digital money, including cross-border payments and digital asset settlements.”

What it Means for Americans

If you’re new to the crypto world don’t worry, you’ll catch up very quickly.

Stablecoins are used to move ​money around the world in the form of cryptocurrency, and are mostly used in crypto trading.

But a rebound in crypto prices in 2024 and U.S. President Donald Trump’s support for the ​sector sparked a revival of interest in the idea of using blockchain in the ​mainstream financial system.

Americans have already seen an integration of digital banking as more traditional bank branches have closed across the country.

We’ve seen the transition as online banking has grown over the years. We use Zelle for transactions, Apple Pay, or ‘tap’ features to process payments instantly.

Soon, every American will have a crypto wallet just like they store credit cards on their apple wallet.
