Authorities in the U.S. are actively searching for the man responsible for the shooting death of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare, on a New York street.
In a surprising twist, police found Monopoly money inside a backpack believed to belong to the gunman, which was discovered in Central Park following the tragic incident.
According to two sources familiar with the investigation, the fake currency was located in the backpack, which was recovered by detectives on Friday.
However, law enforcement officials have yet to identify the shooter or determine his motive for the crime.
It is suspected that the gunman may have fled New York shortly after the attack, potentially taking a bus out of the city.
The backpack contained a jacket, though it remains unclear if it was the same one worn during the shooting.
Despite ongoing searches, including efforts in wooded areas and near fountains in Central Park, no weapon has been found.
Investigators are particularly focused on Atlanta, where the shooter is believed to have traveled from.
Detectives are examining surveillance footage from the bus station and along the Greyhound Bus route to trace his movements.
Brian Thompson was shot outside his company’s annual investor meeting, held at a hotel near Radio City Music Hall and the Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan.
Video evidence shows the suspect riding a bicycle into Central Park and later taking a taxi to a bus station, from which he could potentially reach New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, or Washington, D.C.
Throughout his time in the city, including during the attack, the gunman concealed his identity with a mask.
In light of the case, the FBI has announced a reward of $50,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the shooter, underscoring the urgency of the investigation.
As detectives continue to gather clues, the search for justice for Brian Thompson remains a top priority.
