International Restaurant Beefeater Will Now Close All Locations
52-year-old international restaurant Beefeater will now close all 106 locations across the UK after its parent company announced soaring operating costs.
Whitbread said higher operating costs is forcing the closure of Beefeater’s 106 steakhouse locations.
Beefeater had a total of 140 restaurant locations at its peak.
The restaurant earned a reputation for being family-friendly and affordable since its opening in the Greater London borough of Enfield in 1974.
Although markets data shows that the global market for dining out is projected to grom from $1.9 trillion today to over $3 trillion by 2030, many chains continue to close locations due to multifaceted reasons.
This includes a change in consumer habits and spend, and rising costs.
“As you may have seen, we have recently announced changes to our business, which is resulting in the closure of our Branded Restaurants,” Whitbread said in a statement on the location closures.
“This means that on Thursday 10 September 2026 your local Beefeater and all other UK Beefeaters will close.”
These restaurant closures are impacting thousands of employees.
Beefeater Layoffs and Job Transfers
Approximately 3,800 employees have been registered with Beefeater as of 2026.
Whitbread said that some employees will have opportunities to transfer to jobs within their hospitality portfolio and new hotel restaurants.
Despite these new opportunities for Beefeater employees, the company also acknowledged that the mass closures of its restaurant will result in significant layoffs.
“We recognise [UK] the impact of this proposal on colleagues who work at the affected sites,” the letter sent to Beefeater rewards members read.
“As a business which recruits around 15,000 people every year, we expect to be able to retain a significant proportion of those affected and will be looking to redeploy as many of our impacted colleagues as possible.”
Users on Reddit lamented the Beefeater restaurant closures.
“Until I went to university the only restaurant I’d ever been to was a Beefeater,” one woman wrote.
“We’d go for various family birthdays. I absolutely loved it.”
Another Redditor expressed how disheartening the closures are for low income families.
“Of all the things, I’m genuinely a bit sad about this. Pub restaurants like this and Brewers Fayre can be a real community hub in poorer areas, where low income families can get out for a bit, they cater for kids with activities and cheap meals.”
For now, Beefeater joins the trend of restaurant closures amid a challenging and ever-evolving landscape.
