A Popular Florida Retail Mall Has Now Been Demolished

A popular Florida retail mall has now been demolished after 59 years. The mall for many years was anchored by retailer JCPenney.

Regency Square Mall in Jacksonville, Florida, is being reduced to rubble to make way for a mixed-use redevelopment project.

The city issued a permit Aug. 28 for Realco Recycling Co. Inc. to demolish the East Mall between Impact Church and the former JC Penney department store at the 9501 Arlington Expy property.

Regency Square Mall had its grand opening back in 1966.

The teardown began in the mall’s former food court area.

But the Florida mall isn’t the only mall going through turmoil.

JCPenney Retailer to Close at Ridgmar Mall

The JCPenney at Ridgmar Mall in Fort Worth, Texas will be closing in October.

It was loved by shoppers and seen as one of the last anchor stores since Macy’s closed back in 2016.

Sears and Neiman Marcus both also closed their Ridgmar stores in 2017.

This leaves Dillard’s as the malls largest store once JCPenney closes permanently.

The company released a statement explaining the reason behind the store closure:

“Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market.”

Now JCPenney is having a closing sale of up to 20 to 50 percent off.

All sales after July 16 are final meaning returns and exchanges cannot be accepted.

“We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Fort Worth location through the years.

We hope to continue serving them at our other Dallas-Fort Worth locations and online,” the company said.

Consumers Begin to Cut Retail Spending

As inflation rises, consumers in general are beginning to cut retail spending.

Retail sales fell 0.6% in July from the prior month, the Commerce Department said Friday, down from June’s 0.2% and marking the steepest drop since May 2025.

These numbers are not adjusted for inflation, only for seasonal swings.

A separate report from the University of Michigan showed that consumer sentiment dropped around 8% early this month to a preliminary reading of 51, ending a two-month streak of rising sentiment.

This means consumer behavior is shifting based on sentiment as they lose confidence in the US economy.

Consumer spending is extremely important for the economy as it’s what keeps the world as we know it moving forward.

Consumer spending affects everyone. If Americans are spending less, businesses fall or go bankrupt, leading to an economic downturn and eventually a recession.

“American consumers are showing signs of fatigue,” Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said.

For the most part, consumer spending has held up due to a significant drop in unemployment.

Still, new hiring has been sluggish for American job seekers.

And while US consumer spending has been steady, Americans continue to feel the pain or rising prices.
