13 companies including Microsoft are now laying off thousands of workers in Washington state by the first week of August, according to WARN data.

It’s important to note that under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, employers with more than 100 full-time workers must provide a 60-day notice before laying off 50 or more employees at a single site.

So far in 2025, there has been approximately 5,423 WARN layoffs across a total of 30 businesses, per the state’s Department of Labor.

On May 13, 2025, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed Engrossed Second Substitute Senate Bill 5525 (E2SSB 5525) into law.

This legislation, also known as the “Securing Timely Notification and Benefits for Laid-Off Employees Act,” requires certain employers to provide a minimum of 60 days’ notice to the state, affected employees, and/or any relevant union before implementing mass layoffs or business closures.

The law goes into effect on July 27, 2025.

Regarding the law’s signing, Governor Ferguson stated, “This notice gives workers a window of time to secure other employment, retraining or necessary benefits.”

This statement highlights the protective aspect of the new law for workers facing potential job loss.
