A Thousand Oaks man has now been sentenced to life in prison following the horrifying abuse of his 4-year-old daughter that left in a vegetative state.
A man from Thousand Oaks has been sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole, following the horrific abuse of his 4-year-old daughter, which has left her in a permanent vegetative state.
Tekquan Alexander, 28, was found guilty of brutally beating his daughter, Alani, on multiple occasions in November 2021.
According to prosecutors and testimonies presented in court, the first instance of abuse occurred when Alexander punched Alani and struck her with a belt.
Just days later, he brutally attacked her again after she wet the bed.
This time, he escalated the violence by using both a belt and a stereo cable, continuing to beat her until she lost consciousness in the bathroom.
As a result of the relentless abuse, Alani was hospitalized with severe and life-threatening injuries.
These included a traumatic brain injury, subdural hematoma, spinal compression, multiple bone fractures, and numerous contusions and abrasions.
Tragically, Alani, who was only 4 years old at the time of the assault, continues to face profound challenges.
On the day of the sentencing, she turned 8 years old, yet her birthday was marked by the harsh reality of her condition.
Deputy District Attorney Rikole Kelly, who prosecuted the case, expressed that while no punishment can truly reverse the lifelong struggles Alani will endure, knowing that her father will spend the rest of his life behind bars offers a small measure of justice.
Alexander was convicted on charges that included torture, assault on a child resulting in a comatose condition, and corporal injury to a child.
The court also recognized special allegations, noting that he was armed with a weapon, that Alani was vulnerable, and that Alexander abused his position of trust as a parent, leading to great bodily harm inflicted on a child under 5.
Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko highlighted the ongoing impact of the abuse, stating, “Alani continues to suffer from profound and life-altering consequences due to the injuries sustained.
She remains paralyzed and in a vegetative state.”
Her condition necessitates round-the-clock medical care and support for even the most basic functions, underscoring the devastating effects of her father’s actions.
In addition to the horrific abuse, authorities discovered an unsecured assault rifle and a handgun in Alexander’s bedroom during their initial investigation, raising further concerns about the safety of the household.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences of child abuse and the lifelong impact it can have on victims and their families.
As Alani’s family grapples with the emotional and physical toll of her injuries, the community is left to reflect on the importance of protecting vulnerable children and holding abusers accountable for their actions.
