Employees Stress Over More Amazon Layoffs in 2026

Employees are stressing over more Amazon layoffs coming in 2026 after the giant has pruned tens of thousands of jobs over the year.

“I believe the strategy is taking shape. In house AI divestment and workforce reduction enabled by third party coding tools. Amazon gave up on Building its own AGI, the signal is clear.

I worry massive layoffs are around the corner. In multiple waves for a safer play,” said one user on r/amazonemployees.

“You mean like the multiple waves that have happened every ~3 months over the last year?,” said another Reddit user.

The more alarming update comes from an active user on TeamBlind stating that according to multiple people, Amazon will be laying off 8,500 employees from its consumer department.

“I’ve heard it from multiple people that consumer has gotten bloated again and isn’t bringing in either the revenue or the growth like AWS. The breakup (rough numbers) I have is as follows

  1. Operations: 2000
  2. SDE: 1500
  3. AS: 500
  4. Management (Managers, Program and Product Managers, etc.): 1000
  5. HR: 500
  6. Recruiting: 500
  7. SDET, Data Science and QA: 1000
  8. Others: 1000″

While these upcoming Amazon layoffs for 2026 remain officially unconfirmed, it shows growing concerns from employees of their livelihoods.

In Atlanta, employees are warning that Amazon is dropping shifts “like crazy.”

Jaida Parks posted on the Facebook Group “Anybody Hiring – Atlanta” that shifts are going fast, leaving many workers in the Stone Mountain area concerned for their jobs.

Ongoing “pruning” and smaller rounds have hit specific units like Seller Partner Services, AWS, Prime Video, and most recently, elements of the AGI and model customization groups.

Reasons Behind Amazon Layoffs in 2026

The reasons for the ongoing Amazon layoffs in 2026 is multifaceted.

CEO Andy Jassy and corporate communications frame the layoffs as an organizational restructuring to reduce management layers, remove bureaucracy, and redirect spending toward practical, revenue-generating AI infrastructure and customer initiatives.

Impacted U.S. workers have generally been offered 90 days of pay and benefits, severance packages, transitional health coverage, and internal job search windows, according to a company update on their official website.

In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson said building large AI models remains “one of the most important things we’re working on,” but said the company is also “sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts.”

“That focus means some difficult decisions, including eliminating some roles within parts of our AGI organization, even as we continue to invest in the areas most important to our customers’ future,” the spokesperson said.

Just last year, Amazon laid off 14,000 managerial positions, aiming to save between $2.1 billion and $3.6 billion annually, a seismic shift in the company’s operational strategy under CEO Andy Jassy.

Will Amazon layoffs continue throughout the rest of 2026 and into 2027? The trend certainly shows Amazon layoffs are going in that direction.
