Does Web Traffic Decline During the Summer?

You’re probably wondering, does web traffic decline during the summer? And more particularly does web traffic decline in July?

Web traffic, whether its to your business or blog, tends to take a dip during the summer months.

Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done about it.

The plus sign is that you are not the only one going through a traffic dip during the summer months.

During this ‘summer slump’, you might see a drop in your traffic and revenue due to a number of factors.

I took it to Quora’s AI bot Poe, to see what the statistics are behind this dreadful time during the year for millions of websites across the internet.

And according to Poe, from August of 2023 data, internet web traffic does indeed tend to decline somewhat during the month of July compared to other months of the year.

In this article we’re going to explore the many reasons why you might be seeing a decline in traffic during June, July, and even August.

I will also provide you with some tips as to what I’ve done to ride the ‘summer slump’, and what you can do while we wait for the heavier season to take place.

Let’s get started!

Does Web Traffic Decline in July?

According to Quora’s AI bot Poe, traffic does tend to decline more during the month of July compared to other months of the year.

While online web traffic declines isn’t cookie-cutter between the summer months of June, July, and August, here are a few reasons as to why you may experience a decline in traffic during the summer:

  1. Summer vacation season: Many people, especially families and students, take vacations and spend less time online during the summer months, including July. This can lead to a temporary dip in overall web traffic.
  2. Seasonal browsing patterns: Certain types of online activities, such as entertainment, shopping, and educational content, may experience decreased traffic as people spend more time outdoors or engaged in other summer activities.
  3. Business slowdown: Some industries and businesses may slow down their online operations or marketing efforts during the summer, contributing to a temporary decline in web traffic.

However, it’s important to note that the degree of this decline can vary depending on the specific industry, region, and user demographics.

Let’s also break down the summer season of traffic.

Will Web Traffic Pickup After Summer?

Web traffic tends to pick up sometime in August and into the fall months.

To better understand the summer traffic dips and trends, below is a breakdown of how traffic tends to affect website between June and August:

June:

  • Web traffic tends to remain relatively high in June as it is the start of the summer season.
  • Many people are still transitioning into their summer schedules, and online activities may not have slowed down significantly yet.
  • Website traffic and engagement levels are often still fairly robust in June.

July:

  • This is typically the month when web traffic experiences the most substantial decline during the summer.
  • The combination of peak vacation season, increased outdoor activities, and business slowdowns contribute to a noticeable drop in overall internet usage and website visits.
  • The decline in July can range from 5-15% compared to the preceding months, depending on the industry and user demographics.

August:

  • While web traffic is still lower compared to non-summer months, the decline is generally less severe in August than in July.
  • As summer comes to an end and people start preparing for the upcoming fall season, online activity begins to pick up again.
  • The traffic decline in August is usually in the range of 2-10% compared to July, indicating a gradual recovery.

So, how do you beat this summer slump?

How to Beat The Summer Slump

How to beat the summer slump.
How to beat the summer slump.

Trying to beat the summer slump can feel like going against the tides; believe me, I know what you’re going through.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about not just the summer slump, but any big holiday during the year is to focus on what is in your control.

Don’t spend your time focusing on what’s out of your control, but rather focus on continuing to execute.

Even if it feels like it doesn’t matter what you do during this summer slump.

Coming from a workaholic, it’s also a good time to catch up on your rest as well as family time.

Stick to your system, stick to what you know works.

And if you need constant reassurance, bookmark this page to remind yourself why web traffic slows down during the summer.

It will remind you that people are simply spending less time online due to summer vacation.
