A tragic hit-and-run incident now claims life in Perris after a 23-year-old man, under the influence, collided with an innocent woman’s vehicle.
In a heartbreaking incident early Sunday morning, the 23-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with a deadly hit-and-run collision in Perris.
Ivan Simmons is facing serious charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run resulting in death, and driving under the influence (DUI) causing bodily injury.
Simmons remains in custody at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta, with bail set at a staggering $1 million.
Collision Details
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported that deputies from the Perris station responded to an emergency call regarding a traffic accident at the intersection of Placentia Avenue and southbound Interstate 215 at approximately 12:20 a.m. on Sunday.
Upon arrival, they discovered two vehicles involved in the collision: a Dodge truck and a Toyota sedan.
Tragically, the driver of the Toyota sedan, identified as 26-year-old Jocelyn Mendoza, was found unresponsive at the scene.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, Mendoza was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival, leaving the community in mourning.
Investigation Insights
The Riverside Coroner’s Office confirmed Mendoza’s identity on Sunday and began the grim task of notifying her family.
As part of the investigation, the Perris Station Reconstruction Team conducted a thorough examination of the accident scene.
Preliminary findings indicated that Mendoza was in the process of exiting the freeway onto Placentia Avenue when Simmons, who was traveling westbound, collided with her vehicle at the intersection.
Following the crash, Simmons allegedly attempted to flee the scene.
However, law enforcement officials apprehended him just a short distance away, ensuring that he would face the consequences of his actions.
Community Impact and Road Closures
In the wake of this tragic event, authorities implemented a temporary road closure on Placentia Avenue, specifically between the northbound Interstate 215 Freeway and Harvill Avenue.
This closure was necessary to facilitate the investigation and to gather vital evidence related to the incident.
The Perris community is left grappling with the aftermath of this devastating loss, as friends and family mourn the untimely death of Jocelyn Mendoza.
