In a twist that feels ripped from a political thriller, FBI agents raided the Washington office of John Bolton—Donald Trump’s fired national security adviser turned arch-nemesis—and uncovered classified documents marked “secret,” according to newly unsealed court filings.
The August sweep, which also hit Bolton’s Maryland home, has reignited whispers of mishandling sensitive intel, echoing the very accusations that once dogged Trump himself.
The search warrant, detailed in papers obtained by Politico, paints a picture of folders stuffed with high-stakes material: discussions on weapons of mass destruction, “secret” travel memos, and “confidential” files tied to a U.S. mission at the United Nations and broader government strategic communications.
The FBI didn’t put a number on the haul, but they made it clear these weren’t your run-of-the-mill papers—pages explicitly labeled “secret” were in the mix.
A History of Holding Secret Files
No such goodies turned up at Bolton’s Bethesda home, though, leaving the focus squarely on his D.C. digs.
This isn’t Bolton’s first brush with classified drama.
Back in 2020, as Trump wrapped up his first term, the Justice Department launched a probe into the hawkish Republican for spilling beans in his explosive memoir, The Room Where It Happened.
The book, a tell-all roast of Trump’s foreign policy blunders, drew a failed lawsuit from the administration to block its release.
Bolton didn’t hold back, and neither did the feds at the time—they accused him of conspiracy to mishandle defense info and unauthorized retention of classified docs.
But under President Joe Biden, the case fizzled out in June 2021 with no charges.
Fast-forward to now, and the ghost of that investigation is back.
The FBI’s warrant spells out they’re chasing evidence of “conspiracy to gather, transmit, or lose defense information” and the “unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents.” I
t’s a sore spot for Bolton, who’s spent years torching Trump at every turn. In a fresh paperback edition of his book dropped in January 2024, he didn’t mince words: “Trump really cares only about retribution for himself, and it will consume much of a second term.”
What Happens Moving Forward?
The timing couldn’t be more loaded.
Trump, fresh off his 2024 win, has made no secret of his grudge against Bolton, whom he booted in 2019 amid clashes over Iran and Afghanistan.
And let’s not forget the irony: Trump faced his own classified docs circus at Mar-a-Lago, where he was hit with 37 felony counts for hoarding top-secret files and stonewalling the feds.
He pleaded not guilty, calling it a “witch hunt,” but U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon tossed the case over gripes with special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment.
An appeal was in the works, but with Trump back in the Oval, DOJ policy nixed prosecuting a sitting president. Bolton’s raid?
It smells like payback to some—a way to flip the script on the guy who once spilled Trump’s secrets.
Bolton’s camp hasn’t fired back yet; his legal team didn’t respond to requests for comment from The Daily Beast.
But in a town where grudges fester like bad coffee, this could be just the opening salvo.
With midterms looming and Trump’s retribution tour in full swing, the Bolton probe feels less like routine housekeeping and more like a chapter in an endless Washington grudge match.
If history’s any guide, expect the fireworks to fly.
