In a bombshell revelation from newly released documents, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, referred to disgraced financier and convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein as a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend” in a 2011 email—despite publicly condemning him and promising to sever all contact just weeks earlier.
The email, published by The Sun and the Mail on Sunday, has reignited scrutiny over the British royal family’s ties to Epstein, coming on the heels of recent controversies involving Prince Andrew and former UK ambassador Lord Peter Mandelson.
The saga traces back to March 7, 2011, when Ferguson gave an interview to the Evening Standard, apologizing for accepting £15,000 from Epstein to help pay off her debts.
In the interview, she described her association with Epstein as a “gigantic error of judgment” and emphatically stated, “I abhor paedophilia and any sexual abuse of children.”
She added, “I cannot state more strongly that I know a terrible, terrible error of judgement was made, my having anything to do with Jeffrey Epstein.
What he did was wrong and for which he was rightly jailed.”
Ferguson also pledged she would “never have anything to do with Epstein again.”
Epstein had been convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor, serving 13 months in jail under a controversial plea deal.
Ferguson’s public statements appeared to draw a firm line under her involvement with the financier, who was known for his connections to high-profile figures including presidents, celebrities, and royalty.
The Leaked Email
However, on April 26, 2011—just weeks after her interview—Ferguson allegedly sent Epstein a private email that painted a starkly different picture.
In the message, obtained by the Mail on Sunday from a trove of Epstein’s documents released by a US congressional panel, she “humbly” apologized for publicly disowning him.
“As you know, I did not, absolutely not, say the ‘P word’ about you but understand it was reported that I did,” she wrote.
Ferguson went on to lavish praise on Epstein, stating, “You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family.”
She explained that she had been “advised, in no uncertain terms, to have nothing to do with you” to protect her career as a children’s book author and philanthropist, as well as to avoid causing more problems for herself, Prince Andrew (referred to as “the duke“), and Epstein.
The duchess described being “bedridden with fear” and expressed concern about hurting Andrew further.
An earlier email from January 22, 2011, addressed Epstein as “my dear, dear friend Jeffrey” and thanked him for his help with her debts, which she attributed to “lavish spending” after her “horrible” divorce from Prince Andrew in 1996.
In that message, she requested additional financial assistance, including funds for her daughter Beatrice’s school fees.
Duchess’s Defense
A spokesperson for Ferguson has defended the email, insisting it was sent solely to “assuage Epstein and his threats” after he threatened to sue her for defamation over her public comments associating him with pedophilia.
“Like many people, she was taken in by his lies,” the spokesperson said.
“As soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly.”
They emphasized that Ferguson stands by her 2011 condemnation and that her “first thoughts are with his victims.”
The spokesperson added that the message was crafted on advice to prevent legal action, and Ferguson “does not resile from anything she said then.”
Despite the explanation, critics have labeled the email “sycophantic” and “fawning,” suggesting it exposes a cynical effort to maintain ties while protecting her public image.
This leak adds fresh fuel to the ongoing Epstein scandal, which has long entangled the British establishment.
Ferguson’s ex-husband, Prince Andrew, settled a civil lawsuit out of court in 2022 with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse after being introduced by Epstein.
No admission of liability was made, but the fallout led to Andrew stepping back from public duties and losing his military titles and patronages.
