July 13, 2025 — Tech billionaire Elon Musk has publicly urged President Donald Trump to release the Jeffrey Epstein files, aligning with a growing chorus of conservative voices demanding transparency.
The call comes amid a highly publicized rift between Musk and Trump, escalating tensions over unfulfilled campaign promises and the handling of sensitive government documents.
On July 13, 2025, Musk took to X, stating, “He said ‘Epstein’ half a dozen times while telling everyone to stop talking about Epstein. Just release the files as promised.”
The controversy stems from Trump’s 2024 campaign pledge to declassify and release all documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Despite the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI announcing that no secret “client list” exists and confirming Epstein’s death as a suicide, frustration has mounted among Trump’s base over the lack of new disclosures.
Musk’s remarks followed Trump’s Truth Social post on July 12, 2025, urging supporters to stop targeting Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has faced criticism for her handling of the Epstein case.
Musk’s latest comments mark a continuation of his evolving stance on the issue.
In June 2025, he made a now-deleted claim that Trump’s name appeared in the Epstein files, alleging this was why they remained unreleased.
Musk later apologized, stating, “I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week.
They went too far.”
He also alleged that former Trump strategist Steve Bannon was named in the files, a claim tied to reports of Bannon’s meetings with Epstein in 2019, though no evidence has confirmed such involvement.
The Epstein files have been a lightning rod for controversy.
In February 2025, Bondi released a batch of documents dubbed “Phase One,” but these were criticized for containing little new information.
Prominent conservatives, including podcasters, commentators, and former Trump officials like Bannon, have since demanded full declassification.
Bannon, in particular, called for Bondi to unseal all Epstein-related documents, reflecting widespread dissatisfaction within MAGA circles.
Musk and Trump Fallout
Musk’s public fallout with Trump began in May 2025 over disagreements about the “Big Beautiful Bill,” a Republican spending package Musk criticized as fiscally reckless.
The feud intensified when Trump threatened to cancel federal contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla, while Musk floated the idea of launching a third political party.
The Epstein file issue has since become a flashpoint, with Musk questioning, “What the hell kind of system are we living in if thousands of kids were abused, the government has videos of the abusers and yet none of the abusers are even facing charges!?”
Trump’s past association with Epstein, including social interactions in the 1990s and early 2000s, has been well-documented, though no evidence links him to Epstein’s crimes.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing, stating in 2024, “I was never on Epstein’s Plane, or at his ‘stupid’ Island.”
A White House source emphasized that Trump expelled Epstein from his Palm Beach Golf Club years ago, and the administration has released files containing Trump’s name without revealing new incriminating details.
The DOJ and FBI’s July 2025 memo, which dismissed the existence of a “client list” and reaffirmed Epstein’s suicide, has not quelled demands for transparency.
FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, both Trump appointees, reportedly pushed for more disclosures but were overruled.
House Democrats, including Reps. Stephen Lynch and Robert Garcia, have also pressed Bondi and Patel for clarity, citing Musk’s earlier allegations about Trump.
As the debate rages, Musk’s influence on X, where he commands 221 million followers, continues to amplify the issue.
His posts, including a July 8, 2025, tweet questioning Trump’s credibility for not releasing the files, have fueled MAGA unrest.
Whether Bondi and the DOJ will respond to mounting pressure remains uncertain, but the Epstein files continue to cast a shadow over Trump’s second term.
