A motorcycle deputy has now been killed on a 91 Freeway crash in Riverside after colliding into a stopped sedan while in traffic.
Funeral arrangements are currently being organized for Riverside County Sheriffโs Deputy Timothy Corlew, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on the 91 Freeway.
The collision, which involved his patrol motorcycle and a sedan that was stopped in traffic, occurred early Wednesday morning.
Details of the Incident
Deputy Corlew was fatally injured around 5:35 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the freeway near La Sierra Avenue in Riverside, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Officer Dan Olivas, a spokesperson for the CHP’s Inland Empire Division, provided details about the incident in a statement released later that afternoon.
Corlew was traveling in the High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane at an undetermined speed when he encountered unexpected traffic that had come to a halt across all lanes.
Collision with Stopped Traffic
For reasons that are still under investigation, Deputy Corlew collided with the rear of a Toyota (Lexus).
The impact caused him to be ejected from his motorcycle and subsequently strike a Hyundai sedan.
Paramedics from the Riverside Fire Department arrived at the scene within minutes and attempted to perform life-saving measures.
Unfortunately, Deputy Corlew was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Injury Report and Investigation
The driver of the Lexus sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the same hospital for treatment, while the occupant of the Hyundai was unharmed.
The CHPโs Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is currently working to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragic accident.
Officer Javier Navarro from the CHPโs Riverside office indicated to City News Service that, based on the information available, it is “unlikely any criminal charges will be coming out of this down the road.”
Community Reaction and Remembrance
Sheriff Chad Bianco expressed his condolences via social media, stating, “with immense sadness and a heavy heart, I must report the sheriff’s office has lost another deputy in a line-of-duty death.”
Deputy Corlew joined the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in February 2016 and began his career as a bailiff after graduating from the public safety academy later that year.
He transitioned to patrol operations at the Jurupa Valley station in August 2019 and completed Motor School in June 2022 before serving as a motorcycle patrolman.
In a statement, the sheriffโs department extended their deepest sympathies to Deputy Corlewโs family, urging the community to pray for his wife and two sons as well as for the men and women of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office during this difficult time.
Recent Line-of-Duty Deaths
This incident marks a heartbreaking continuation of a challenging period for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The last line-of-duty death occurred in May 2023 when Deputy Brett Michael Harris, just 27 years old, was killed while responding to a backup call.
His patrol SUV was struck by a sedan at a San Jacinto intersection, resulting in fatal injuries.
This tragic series of events began with the death of 30-year-old Deputy Darnell Calhoun, who was ambushed in January 2023 during a domestic violence incident in Lakeland Village.
Just a month earlier, on December 29, 2022, Deputy Isaiah Albert Cordero, 32, lost his life during a traffic stop when he was shot by a felon who had been released from jail early.
As the Riverside County community comes to terms with this tragic loss, the outpouring of support for Deputy Timothy Corlew’s family and colleagues serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department continues to ask for prayers and support during this challenging time as they honor the memory of those who have fallen in the line of duty.
