July 29, 2025 — Conservative media personality Megyn Kelly has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s administration for its handling of the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein controversy, describing the situation as a “self-inflicted” crisis that has fueled distrust among the MAGA base.
Speaking on the July 28, 2025, episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, Kelly expressed frustration with the administration’s approach, particularly targeting Attorney General Pam Bondi’s decision to release a brief Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI memo that dismissed the existence of an Epstein “client list” and reaffirmed his 2019 death as a suicide.
Kelly’s remarks underscore a growing rift within the conservative movement, as key Trump supporters demand greater transparency on the Epstein case.
The controversy began earlier this month when the DOJ and FBI issued a joint statement asserting that no further disclosures were warranted in the Epstein case, stating that the financier, who died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, took his own life and did not maintain a “client list” as many conspiracy theorists have claimed.
This memo, released during a slow news cycle, was met with outrage from Trump’s core supporters, who viewed it as a betrayal of campaign promises to release previously classified Epstein files.
Kelly noted that the administration’s failure to hold a press conference or provide detailed explanations exacerbated the backlash, stating, “Whoever told the Justice Department that this could somehow be buried and that people would move on… should be fired.
That person is an idiot and didn’t understand the Republican base—certainly the core MAGA base.”
Kelly specifically called out Trump’s appointments of Kash Patel as FBI Director and Dan Bongino as Deputy Director, both of whom had previously amplified theories that Epstein was murdered to protect powerful associates.
“There were no bigger proponents of there being more to the Epstein story than Kash Patel and Dan Bongino,” Kelly said, adding that their appointments had initially thrilled MAGA supporters who expected revelations.
She argued that the administration’s current stance contradicts the expectations set by these appointments, stating, “You reap what you sow.”
Political Fallout Grows Amid Trump Epstein Speculation

The administration’s subsequent efforts to mitigate the fallout have been met with skepticism.
The DOJ’s request to unseal Epstein’s grand jury transcripts was rejected by a Florida judge, and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s interviews with Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for her role in Epstein’s crimes, have been criticized as unlikely to yield credible information.
Kelly questioned Maxwell’s reliability, noting, “Can we really trust anything this woman says when it’s either this—give something up or someone up—or spend 20 years in jail?”
Kelly’s critique aligns with broader sentiments within the MAGA movement, as evidenced by posts on X and comments from other conservative figures like Steve Bannon, Laura Loomer, and Charlie Kirk, who have called for full disclosure of Epstein-related files.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer’s recent subpoena to depose Maxwell reflects ongoing congressional pressure for transparency.
However, Trump has dismissed these demands, labeling the controversy a “hoax” and calling supporters who focus on it “weaklings” who are doing the Democrats’ bidding.
On July 14, Kelly sparked further discussion by suggesting on her podcast, The Megyn Kelly Show, that Trump may have “blessed” a cover-up of Epstein-related information, though she clarified she was not accusing him of concealing a “child sex ring.”
She speculated that the administration might be withholding information to protect individuals named in the files or due to concerns about the credibility of accusers.
These comments, which stunned guest Ben Shapiro, highlight the internal tensions within Trump’s base as they grapple with unfulfilled promises.
The Epstein controversy continues to dominate conservative media, with outlets like Newsmax and influencers like Alex Jones keeping the story alive, while Fox News has noticeably reduced coverage following Trump’s directive to move on.
Kelly, however, emphasized her journalistic duty to pursue the truth, stating, “You approach all stories… with a hefty dose of skepticism.”
Her remarks reflect a broader challenge for the Trump administration: balancing the expectations of a base primed for conspiracy theories with the realities of governance.
As the MAGA base grows increasingly vocal, the administration faces mounting pressure to address the Epstein case transparently.
Whether through releasing additional documents or holding a press conference, as Kelly and others have urged, the issue remains a significant test of Trump’s leadership and credibility among his supporters.
