July 23, 2025 – President Donald Trump’s recent accusation of “treason” against former President Barack Obama has ignited fervent calls from prominent MAGA figures, led by Steve Bannon, for criminal prosecutions.
The allegations, made during a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the Oval Office, center on claims that Obama orchestrated a conspiracy to undermine Trump’s 2016 election victory.
These claims have intensified existing tensions within the MAGA movement, particularly amid ongoing controversies surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein case.
On July 22, 2025, President Trump accused Obama of “treason” during a press interaction, asserting that Obama and his administration attempted to “steal the election” by manufacturing evidence of Russian interference in 2016.
Trump’s remarks followed a report by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who, on July 18, 2025, announced she was referring declassified documents to the Justice Department for a criminal investigation.
Gabbard alleged that Obama’s national security team manipulated intelligence to subvert Trump’s presidency, describing it as a “treasonous conspiracy”.
The documents, outlined in an 11-page memo, claim that Obama administration officials politicized intelligence to falsely tie Trump to Russia.
However, these claims have been contested.
A 2020 bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio, affirmed that Russia interfered in the 2016 election through social media campaigns and email leaks, but found no evidence of vote tampering.
Democratic Representative Jim Himes dismissed the allegations, stating, “There’s not a judge in the land who will treat this with anything other than laughter”.
Bannon’s Call to Action

Steve Bannon, former White House strategist and host of the War Room podcast, has emerged as a leading voice urging Trump to follow through on these accusations.
In an interview with Axios, Bannon warned that failing to prosecute Obama and others would be “devastating” to the MAGA movement.
“He accused his predecessor as commander-in-chief of treason—in front of another head of state and live on global TV. This unprecedented move makes the follow-through vitally important,” Bannon said.
Bannon’s rhetoric was echoed on social media, with posts on X amplifying his call for prosecutions.
On July 18, 2025, multiple users shared a Gateway Pundit article quoting Bannon as saying, “Ben Rhodes, Obama, all of them, they’re going to rot in freaking prison!”
These posts reflect the intense sentiment among some MAGA supporters, though one user expressed skepticism, noting, “It would be nice, but will never happen”.
Obama’s office issued a rare statement on July 22, 2025, denouncing Trump’s claims as “outrageous” and a “weak attempt at distraction,” from the Epstein files.
The statement emphasized that the declassified documents do not undermine the established conclusion that Russia sought to influence the 2016 election without altering vote tallies.
Obama’s spokesperson, Patrick Rodenbush, added, “Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response”.

Epstein Connection and MAGA Frustrations

Trump’s accusations against Obama coincide with renewed scrutiny over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender whose case has fueled conspiracy theories among MAGA supporters.
The Justice Department and FBI recently confirmed that Epstein died by suicide in 2019 and that no “client list” of high-profile associates exists, contradicting long-standing MAGA demands for transparency.
This has led to outrage, with figures like Nick Fuentes calling for supporters to “burn their MAGA hats” in protest.
Bannon and others, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, have warned that failing to deliver on promises related to both Epstein and Obama could fracture Trump’s base.
Greene posted on X, “If you tell the base of people, who support you, of deep state treasonous crimes… then you must take down every enemy of The People.
If not, the base will turn and there’s no going back”.
Similarly, pro-Trump podcaster Tim Pool told Axios that supporters might “boo him and condemn him” if Trump backs away from these issues.
The controversy unfolds against a backdrop of internal MAGA tensions, including disputes over U.S. foreign policy, such as recent military actions against Iran.
Bannon has also clashed with other MAGA figures, notably Elon Musk, over issues like SpaceX and government contracts, highlighting the movement’s fractious dynamics.
These divisions underscore the challenges Trump faces in maintaining unity among his supporters while navigating high-stakes allegations.
Despite the fervor, legal experts question the viability of prosecuting Obama based on Gabbard’s report.
The allegations rely on reinterpretations of intelligence assessments already reviewed by multiple investigations, including Robert Mueller’s special counsel probe and the Senate Intelligence Committee, both of which found no evidence of a “coup” or treason.
The Justice Department’s response to Gabbard’s referral remains pending, but skepticism persists about whether these claims will lead to actionable outcomes.
As the MAGA movement presses for accountability, the lack of concrete evidence and the risk of overpromising could deepen disillusionment among Trump’s base, potentially reshaping the political landscape as his administration moves forward.
