On August 16, 2025, far-right activist Laura Loomer took to social media to claim responsibility for a U.S. State Department decision to temporarily halt visitor visas for Palestinians from Gaza.
The announcement followed Loomer’s public criticism of the issuance of medical-humanitarian visas, which she labeled a “national security threat.”
Her posts, which included reposted videos from the nonprofit Heal Gaza showing injured children arriving in the U.S. for medical treatment, sparked a swift policy response and reignited debates about her influence within the Trump administration.
The State Department’s decision, announced on August 16, 2025, paused the issuance of B1/B2 visitor visas for Gazans pending a “full and thorough review” of the vetting process for medical-humanitarian cases.
The department clarified that the pause was in response to concerns about the procedures used to issue a limited number of temporary visas in recent days.
Loomer, a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump, celebrated the move on X, stating, “Today I saved so many American citizens from being killed by pro-HAMAS jihadis.
God only knows how many lives I personally saved today by blowing the whistle on rogue actors at State Department giving visas to Gazan families.”
Her claims have drawn both praise from supporters and sharp criticism from others, who argue her rhetoric fuels division and misrepresents humanitarian efforts.
The controversy began when Loomer reposted videos from Heal Gaza, a nonprofit founded in January 2024 to provide medical care for Palestinian children injured in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The organization, which relies on private donations, has facilitated the evacuation of 50 children to the U.S. for life-saving surgeries and rehabilitation.
Loomer described these efforts as a “covert means to facilitate chain migration” and questioned why “Islamic invaders” were being allowed into the U.S. under the Trump administration.

Critics and Reactions
Critics, including British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan, condemned Loomer’s influence, with Hasan stating on X that if Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were taking her advice, “we are f—ed as a country.”
Reports suggest Loomer directly communicated with Rubio about her concerns, though no official confirmation of these discussions has been provided.
Loomer’s history of provocative activism and her proximity to Trump have amplified her platform.
Despite not holding an official role, she has reportedly influenced staffing decisions within the administration, including the dismissal of National Security Council members and other officials she deemed insufficiently loyal to Trump.
President Trump has previously called her a “fantastic woman” and a “true patriot,” acknowledging her policy recommendations.
The visa freeze comes amid heightened scrutiny of U.S. immigration policies.
Since October 2023, over 61,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza conflict, according to reports, prompting humanitarian efforts like those of Heal Gaza.
The U.S. has issued approximately 3,800 B1/B2 visas to Palestinians with travel documents from the Palestinian Authority, primarily for medical purposes.
The debate over Loomer’s role highlights broader tensions within the Trump administration and its approach to immigration and national security.
While her supporters view her as a whistleblower exposing vulnerabilities, critics argue her actions undermine legitimate humanitarian efforts and promote inflammatory narratives.
Posts on X reflect this divide, with some users calling her a “lunatic” and others defending her as a patriot.
As the State Department reviews its visa processes, questions remain about the balance between security and humanitarian obligations—and whether figures like Loomer will continue to shape U.S. policy from the sidelines.
