In a development that has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats, the Republican-led House Oversight Committee announced on Tuesday that it will not investigate a sexually suggestive birthday letter allegedly written by President Donald Trump to Jeffrey Epstein for the financier’s 50th birthday, handing Trump a significant win in the ongoing controversy surrounding the disgraced sex offender’s files.
The decision, as reported by The Daily Beast, came after Democrats on the committee published all 238 pages of the infamous birthday book compiled by Epstein’s then-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, which included the letter in its third volume.
The letter, signed by Trump and featuring a doodle of a woman’s silhouette, has fueled speculation about his ties to Epstein, but Chairman James Comer dismissed the matter as irrelevant, taking Trump at his word that he did not author or sign it.
As bipartisan calls for full Epstein file transparency intensify, the move has sparked accusations of a cover-up, raising questions about GOP priorities amid Trump’s broader legal and political battles.
The Letter and Committee’s Response

The birthday book, a three-volume collection of greetings for Epstein’s milestone celebration, was subpoenaed by the Oversight Committee and released by Democrats on Monday.
The third volume contained the Trump letter, which reads, “A pal is a wonderful thing. Happy Birthday—and may every day be another wonderful secret,” accompanied by a hand-drawn silhouette of a woman’s body, per The Daily Beast.
Trump, who was friends with Epstein for over a decade, has denied writing or signing the letter, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating it was not authored by him and offering to involve a handwriting expert.
Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the committee’s decision not to pursue an investigation, telling CNN, “The president says he did not sign it, so I take the president at his word,” and adding, “I don’t think the Oversight Committee is going to invest in looking up something 22 years ago. What does it have to do with anything?.”
Comer accused Democrats of “cherry-picking documents and politicizing information,” despite the book being handed over under a subpoena he signed.
He further stated, “President Trump is not accused of any wrongdoing and Democrats are ignoring the new information the Committee received today.”
The letter was first reported by The Wall Street Journal in July 2025, with Trump responding at the time, “I don’t even know what they’re talking about,” and suggesting, “Now, somebody could have written a letter and used my name, but that’s happened a lot.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed doubt about the letter’s authenticity, saying, “They say it’s not.”
Jim Jordan (R-OH) echoed this, stating, “I trust what the president said and the Oversight Committee is looking into it,” and “I trust Chairman Comer, I trust the committee.”

Democratic Backlash and Ongoing Epstein Probe

Democrats on the committee, led by Ranking Member Robert Garcia (D-CA), condemned the decision as part of a White House cover-up.
Garcia called the Epstein case “far from dead and is not a hoax,” stating, “In fact, Oversight Dems are just getting started in our investigation. We will fight like hell to get to the full truth and end this White House cover-up.”
The controversy has deepened GOP divisions, with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) accusing the DOJ of protecting party donors in Epstein’s files.
Bipartisan pressure for transparency continues, with a discharge petition for the Epstein Files Transparency Act nearing 218 signatures.
Epstein survivors, including Haley Robson, have demanded full disclosure, rejecting Trump’s “hoax” claim.
Trump’s relationship with Epstein, spanning the 1980s to early 2000s, has been scrutinized, with Trump calling Epstein a “terrific guy” in a 2002 New York Magazine interview and flying on his jet seven times between 1993 and 1997.
Trump later claimed he banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago in 2007 for harassing a member’s teenage daughter.
The DOJ’s July 7 memo, stating no “client list” exists and confirming Epstein’s suicide, has fueled MAGA discontent, with 83% of Republicans favoring release, per The New York Times.
As the 2026 midterms approach, the Epstein decision could erode Trump’s base, with figures like Greene and Massie challenging his leadership.
