On August 4, 2025, Lenard McKelvey, widely known as Charlamagne Tha God, used his platform on The Breakfast Club to address a scathing social media post by President Donald Trump.
The president’s remarks, posted on Truth Social on August 3, 2025, labeled Charlamagne a “racist sleazebag” and “low IQ individual” following the radio host’s appearance on Fox News’ My View with Lara Trump.
During the July 31 interview, Charlamagne suggested that the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein controversy could shift the Republican Party’s dynamics, potentially allowing traditional conservatives to regain influence from Trump’s MAGA base.
This prediction sparked Trump’s ire, leading to a public feud that has drawn significant attention.
Speaking on his syndicated radio show, Charlamagne dismissed Trump’s personal insults with humor, noting that the term “sleazebag” might apply depending on perspective.
“The definition says it’s a disgusting or despicable person. Some might say that’s me, but I prefer friendly neighborhood a-hole,” he quipped.
More seriously, he refuted the “racist” label, emphasizing that his critique on Lara Trump’s show never mentioned race.
“I didn’t bring up race once. If anything, the irony is the administration’s moves, like the executive order targeting narratives about systemic racism in institutions like the Smithsonian,” he said, referring to Trump’s recent policy directives.
Charlamagne also fact-checked several of Trump’s claims.
The president’s post boasted of “ending five wars,” including a conflict between the Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.
Charlamagne countered, “There’s no credible evidence Trump played any role in ending the ongoing conflict in the Eastern DRC or Rwanda. It’s still active.”
He similarly disputed Trump’s assertion of having “wiped out Iran’s nuclear capabilities,” clarifying that while a significant strike occurred, experts argue Iran’s nuclear program remains a threat due to reduced international oversight.
The radio host didn’t stop at foreign policy.
He challenged Trump’s claims of economic success, particularly the assertion that grocery prices and inflation have “come way down.”
Citing persistent high costs, Charlamagne argued, “People’s groceries are still too expensive. You haven’t lowered the cost.”
He also referenced Trump’s recent dismissal of the labor statistics chief after reports showed rising unemployment, sarcastically noting, “Firing her just added to the unemployment rate, Mr. President.”
Charlamagne’s appearance on Lara Trump’s show was notable, as her guests typically align with MAGA ideology.
The invitation came shortly after Trump declined to endorse Lara Trump’s Senate candidacy in North Carolina, a decision that followed her resignation as co-chair of the Republican National Committee in December 2024.
Charlamagne’s candid remarks on the show, including his prediction about the Epstein files, marked a departure from the expected narrative, prompting Trump’s early-morning social media outburst.

The Epstein Controversy

The Epstein case remains a flashpoint.
Charlamagne’s comments suggested that the MAGA base’s frustration over the Justice Department’s refusal to release additional Epstein documents could fracture Trump’s grip on the GOP.
While Trump promised to disclose the files during his campaign, officials confirmed in 2025 that no “client list” exists and reiterated that Epstein died by suicide in 2019.
This has fueled conspiracy theories and demands for transparency, which Charlamagne argued could empower traditional Republicans.
A Broader MessageClosing his segment, Charlamagne urged Trump to focus on governance over personal attacks.
“The best way to get the headlines you want is to do right by all Americans,” he said, naming Trump the “Donkey of the Day” on The Breakfast Club.
He also expressed resilience against what he called an “authoritarian strategy” to silence critics, stating, “I don’t care who’s in the White House. I’ll speak my mind.”
The exchange highlights tensions within the Republican Party and the broader political discourse.
Charlamagne’s platform, reaching millions through The Breakfast Club, amplifies his influence, making his critiques a significant counterpoint to Trump’s narrative.
As the Epstein saga and economic challenges continue to dominate headlines, this public spat underscores the challenges facing Trump’s second term.
