Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has been actively engaging with her constituents in New York’s 14th Congressional District, addressing both local quality-of-life concerns and broader policy issues, according to her latest newsletter and recent public statements.
Despite criticisms from some community members regarding crime along Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, AOC’s office highlights her ongoing efforts to improve the area while also promoting inclusive policies, such as the option to select “X” as a gender marker on U.S. passports.
Roosevelt Avenue, a vibrant commercial corridor in Queens, has faced significant challenges, including illegal vending, crime, and prostitution, exacerbated by the city’s migrant crisis.
Community leaders, including Rosa Sanchez of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, have called for increased attention to public safety, citing issues like drug trafficking and gang activity.
In response, AOC has taken steps to address these concerns, including attending a meeting with constituents to discuss the proliferation of vendors in and around Corona Plaza, a key area along Roosevelt Avenue.
“Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is committed to improving the quality of life for all residents in her district,” said a spokesperson for AOC.
“She has actively engaged with community members to address the challenges on Roosevelt Avenue, and her office continues to work with local leaders and city officials to find lasting solutions.”
In June 2025, federal authorities charged a gang of illegal migrants with crimes including extortion, assault, and drug trafficking along Roosevelt Avenue, signaling a broader crackdown on illicit activities in the area.
New York City’s “Operation Restore Roosevelt,” launched by Mayor Eric Adams, has resulted in nearly 1,000 arrests.
This includes over 130 prostitution-related offenses, and a reported 25% reduction in crime in the targeted neighborhoods of Elmhurst, North Corona, and Jackson Heights.
Newsletter Highlights Constituent Services and Inclusive Policies
AOC’s July 2025 newsletter showcases her work on both local and national fronts.
Notably, it includes information on how constituents can update their passport gender marker to “X,” reflecting a recent U.S. District Court decision that blocked an executive order requiring Americans to list their biological sex on government documents.
This inclusion underscores AOC’s commitment to supporting the rights of transgender and nonbinary individuals, aligning with her district’s diverse and inclusive values.
The newsletter also highlights significant local achievements.
AOC, alongside Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), celebrated Vaughn College’s admission into the Federal Aviation Administration’s Enhanced Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative.
This program is set to bolster the training of air traffic controllers in the New York City area, one of the world’s busiest air traffic hubs.
Additionally, AOC’s office secured $35,131 in back pay for a constituent seeking Social Security Disability Insurance, demonstrating her commitment to direct constituent services.
Community Perspectives and Ongoing Efforts
While some residents, including Rosa Sanchez, have expressed frustration over persistent issues on Roosevelt Avenue, others acknowledge AOC’s broader contributions.
“Her Corona neighborhood is open and diverse, and we appreciate her advocacy for all residents,” Sanchez noted, while emphasizing the need for continued focus on public safety.
Critics, such as State Conservative Party leader Gerard Kassar, have argued that AOC prioritizes national issues over local ones.
However, her office counters that she balances both, pointing to her work on community projects like the $1 million in Community Project Funding secured for a new GrowNYC Regional Food Hub in the South Bronx, which will enhance food access across NY-14.
A Path Forward
As Roosevelt Avenue continues to face challenges, AOC’s office remains engaged with local stakeholders to support initiatives like “Operation Restore Roosevelt” and to advocate for resources to address root causes.
Her multifaceted approach—combining direct constituent services, community engagement, and advocacy for inclusive policies—reflects her commitment to representing the diverse needs of her district.
