A growing schism within the MAGA movement has erupted over President Donald Trump’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, with retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a former Trump national security adviser, becoming the latest prominent figure to publicly criticize the administration.
Flynn’s pointed remarks, posted on X on July 16, 2025, underscore mounting frustration among Trump’s base following the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) announcement that no additional Epstein files, including a rumored “client list,” will be released, and that Epstein’s 2019 death was a suicide.
This development has sparked accusations of a cover-up, even among Trump’s staunchest allies.
Flynn’s Public Plea to TrumpFlynn, a revered figure in MAGA circles and a vocal proponent of conspiracy theories, posted a 500-word statement on X urging Trump to address the mishandling of the Epstein files.
“With my strongest recommendation, please gather your team and figure out a way to move past this,” Flynn wrote.
“The roll out of this was terrible, no way around that. Americans want America to be successful, therefore, WE NEED YOU TO BE SUCCESSFUL.”
He emphasized that the issue transcends Epstein’s death, focusing instead on accountability for those involved in crimes against children, stating, “If there are elites inside of our country that committed crimes against CHILDREN (shame on them)… they MUST be held ACCOUNTABLE.”
Flynn’s comments come amid a broader revolt from MAGA influencers, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Laura Loomer, Charlie Kirk, and Alex Jones, who have expressed outrage over the DOJ’s July 7 memo.
The memo, issued jointly by the DOJ and FBI, concluded that no evidence supports claims of a “client list” or Epstein’s murder, directly contradicting earlier promises from Trump and his appointees to release explosive documents.
Trump’s Response and MAGA Backlash
The controversy intensified after Trump’s administration announced the closure of its Epstein investigation, prompting a rare public clash within his inner circle.
Trump, attempting to quell the unrest, posted on Truth Social on July 12, defending Attorney General Pam Bondi and dismissing the Epstein files as a “hoax” created by Democrats like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
“My PAST supporters have bought into this ‘bulls–t,’ hook, line, and sinker,” Trump wrote, ridiculing those demanding transparency.
“They haven’t learned their lesson, and probably never will, even after being conned by the Lunatic Left for 8 long years.”
This response has only fueled the fire.
At the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, on July 11, Fox News host Laura Ingraham asked the crowd if they were satisfied with the Epstein investigation’s outcome, receiving overwhelming boos.
Influencer Liz Wheeler, who in February received what was touted as “declassified” Epstein files at a White House event—only to find no new information—called for Bondi’s resignation.
Elon Musk, once a close Trump ally, also joined the critics, tweeting on July 13, “Just release the files as promised.”
Musk’s remarks followed a public feud with Trump over unrelated policy disputes, highlighting the depth of discontent within the conservative sphere.
The Epstein saga has exposed rifts within Trump’s administration. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who in February claimed on Fox News that an Epstein client list was “sitting on my desk right now,” faced intense scrutiny after the DOJ’s recent reversal.
FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, both of whom previously amplified conspiracy theories about Epstein, reportedly clashed with Bondi over the memo.
Bongino, a former right-wing podcaster, skipped work on July 11 and threatened to resign, though he returned by July 14 after “cooler heads prevailed,” according to MAGA podcaster Benny Johnson.
Trump’s campaign promises to release the Epstein files, made as recently as September 2024 on The Lex Fridman Podcast, have added to the sense of betrayal among supporters.
“I’d be inclined to do the Epstein,” Trump said, raising expectations that have since gone unfulfilled.

Epstein’s Shadow Over Trump
The Epstein case is particularly sensitive for Trump, who was photographed with the disgraced financier multiple times before his presidency.
In 2002, Trump described Epstein as a “terrific guy” to New York magazine, though he later claimed to have barred him from Mar-a-Lago.
Audio tapes reported by The Daily Beast in 2024 revealed Epstein claiming to have been Trump’s “closest friend” and introducing him to Melania Trump, though these claims remain unverified by the DOJ.
Democratic lawmakers, seizing on the chaos, have pushed for transparency.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) introduced an amendment to release the Epstein files, which was voted down by Republicans, further stoking suspicions among MAGA supporters.
The Epstein controversy has laid bare the challenges of a movement built on distrust of institutions, now turning that skepticism inward.
Jon Stewart, on The Daily Show, described the situation as an “open revolt,” noting that “MAGAworld, for the first time in memory, isn’t just slavishly acquiescing to Trump’s reality distortion field.”
As Flynn and others demand accountability, the Trump administration faces a critical test of its ability to unify its base ahead of the 2026 midterms.
With figures like Flynn, Musk, and Greene refusing to let the issue fade, the Epstein files remain a potent symbol of unfulfilled promises and a fractured MAGA coalition.
