MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent based in Michigan was arrested on July 24, 2025, following an investigation by the FBI and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
The agent, identified as 51-year-old Harry Marvelle Peless III of Newport, Michigan, is accused of engaging in sexually explicit online conversations with an undercover law enforcement officer posing as a 13-year-old girl.
The investigation revealed that Peless sent explicit videos of himself and child sexual abuse material while soliciting the supposed minor to “run away and have sex.”
The investigation began in September 2024, when Peless, using an online messaging application, initiated contact with the undercover officer.
Authorities state that Peless believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old girl and engaged in near-daily explicit conversations.
During these exchanges, he allegedly sent obscene material and made multiple requests for the minor to meet him for sexual activity.
Evidence obtained by the FBI also showed that Peless accessed the chat account while on duty as a CBP agent in Michigan.
Peless faces multiple charges in New Jersey, including second-degree attempted sexual assault, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree obscenity, and fourth-degree attempted criminal sexual conduct.
Additionally, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan has charged him with attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eaton Brown.
The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the FBI, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility, and the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General.
Authorities have emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, noting that Peless’s actions occurred while he was employed as a federal agent entrusted with public safety.
Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll and Chief of Detectives Robert McNally announced the charges, underscoring the commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals from online predation.
The case remains under investigation by the FBI, with further details pending as the legal process continues.
