President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Friday morning to address ongoing speculation about his ties to the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, asserting that his political adversaries have no substantial evidence against him.
In a post, Trump declared, “THEY HAD NOTHING!!!” referring to Democrats who, he claims, controlled Epstein-related files during their time in power but failed to produce a “smoking gun” implicating him.
The president’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny and internal tensions within his base over the handling of Epstein-related documents, as reported by multiple outlets.
Trump’s post specifically called out former Attorney General Merrick Garland and former FBI Director James Comey, suggesting they had ample opportunity to uncover incriminating evidence but did not.
“If there was a ‘smoking gun’ on Epstein, why didn’t the Dems, who controlled the ‘files’ for four years, and had Garland and Comey in charge, use it?
BECAUSE THEY HAD NOTHING!!!” Trump wrote.
He further dismissed the Epstein controversy as a “hoax” orchestrated by Democrats, a narrative he has pushed in recent days to redirect attention to his administration’s accomplishments.
The Epstein case has been a flashpoint for Trump’s supporters, particularly after a July 6, 2025, memo from the Department of Justice and FBI concluded there was no evidence of a “client list” or blackmail involving powerful figures, and that Epstein died by suicide in 2019.
This announcement sparked significant backlash among some MAGA supporters, who have long demanded the release of additional documents, believing they could expose a broader network of elites.
The memo’s findings contradicted earlier promises from Trump and his allies, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, who in February 2025 stated that an Epstein client list was under review.
In response to the growing unrest, Trump has shifted his strategy, framing the controversy as a Democratic ploy to undermine his presidency.
On Wednesday, he told Real America’s Voice, “The Democrats, you know, they have bad policy, they have bad candidates, they have bad everything, but they stick together,” urging Republicans to investigate the “Jeffrey Epstein hoax” as part of a broader conspiracy against him.
He reiterated this stance in an Oval Office statement, calling for the release of only “credible” files, a position echoed by Bondi.
The president’s comments have not quelled all dissent.
Political Fallout Amongst High Public Figures
Prominent conservatives, including former Trump ally Elon Musk, have publicly pressed for transparency.
Musk tweeted on July 12, “Just release the files as promised,” highlighting the administration’s unfulfilled campaign pledge to declassify Epstein documents.
Some Republicans in Congress, such as House Speaker Mike Johnson and Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Thomas Massie, have also called for more transparency, with Massie attempting to force a House vote on releasing additional files.
The controversy has been further complicated by a forthcoming Wall Street Journal report, which Trump reportedly attempted to suppress by contacting the paper’s editor-in-chief, Emma Tucker.
The report, published on July 17, 2025, detailed a letter Trump allegedly sent to Epstein for his 50th birthday, accompanied by a signed drawing. Trump denied the letter’s authenticity, threatening legal action against the Journal and its owner, Rupert Murdoch.
Despite the internal strife, Trump has emphasized his administration’s successes, claiming in a Truth Social post, “I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country’s history.”
He has urged supporters to move past the Epstein issue, which he described as a distraction from pressing matters like economic achievements and recent events in Texas.
However, the issue continues to resonate, with a CNN poll from July 15, 2025, indicating that 50% of Americans are dissatisfied with the government’s transparency on the Epstein case.
The firing of Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor involved in Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s cases and daughter of James Comey, on July 16, 2025, has added fuel to the controversy.
The Trump administration cited Article II of the Constitution in her dismissal letter, though no explicit reason was provided.
This move has raised questions about the administration’s intentions, particularly given Trump’s public criticism of James Comey in relation to the Epstein files.
As the debate rages, Trump’s insistence that the Epstein controversy is a fabricated “hoax” has drawn mixed reactions.
While some supporters, like conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, have agreed to “trust” the administration and move on, others, including Nick Fuentes and Michael Flynn, have doubled down, with Flynn stating, “The EPSTEIN AFFAIR IS NOT GOING AWAY.”
The issue has exposed rare fractures within the MAGA movement, with some supporters burning their MAGA hats in protest.
The administration faces mounting pressure to address these concerns while maintaining unity.
Trump’s call for focus on his policy achievements, including tax breaks and economic initiatives, reflects an attempt to shift the narrative.
Yet, with bipartisan calls for transparency—such as a resolution from Democrat Ruben Gallego and Republican co-sponsors—the Epstein saga remains a significant challenge for the president.
