In a renewed call for transparency, top House Democrats have urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to release all unredacted documents from the Jeffrey Epstein investigation that reference President-elect Donald Trump.
The request, led by House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin and supported by 15 other Democratic committee members, comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of Epstein’s high-profile associations and the Department of Justice’s handling of related files.
The letter, sent on July 8, 2025, also demands the release of the second volume of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents, accusing the DOJ of selectively withholding information to protect the president-elect.
The Democrats’ letter highlights a June post on X by Elon Musk, a former Trump ally, which alleged—without evidence—that Trump’s name appears in unreleased Epstein files and suggested this as the reason for their non-disclosure.
Musk’s post, which he later deleted, sparked widespread speculation, particularly after his public feud with Trump over fiscal policy.
The lawmakers argue that the DOJ’s refusal to release additional Epstein documents, despite earlier promises of transparency, raises questions about whether the files are being withheld to shield Trump from potentially damaging revelations.
The Epstein files, compiled during federal investigations into the financier’s sex-trafficking activities, include flight logs, contact lists, and court records documenting his connections to prominent individuals.
While some documents were unsealed in January 2024 and February 2025, they were heavily redacted and contained little new information, prompting criticism from both Democrats and some Trump supporters.
In a surprising turn of events, a significant faction of President Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters, often referred to as the MAGA movement, have publicly criticized the Trump administration following a Department of Justice (DOJ) memo released on July 7, 2025, which stated there would be no further disclosures regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s case.
A DOJ memo released on July 7, 2025, concluded that no “client list” exists and reaffirmed Epstein’s 2019 death as a suicide, contradicting conspiracy theories.
The memo also stated there was no evidence of Epstein blackmailing prominent figures, further frustrating those anticipating explosive disclosures.
Trump’s Relationship with Epstein
Trump’s relationship with Epstein, which dates back to the 1980s, has been well-documented.
The two were photographed together at social events, including at Mar-a-Lago in 1997 and 2000, and Trump flew on Epstein’s private plane seven times between 1993 and 1997, according to flight logs released in 2021 during Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial.
In a 2002 New York Magazine interview, Trump described Epstein as a “terrific guy” who shared his interest in “beautiful women… on the younger side.”
However, Trump has since distanced himself, claiming a falling out in 2004 over a real estate dispute and denying any involvement in Epstein’s crimes.
The Democrats’ letter accuses Bondi of using the DOJ as Trump’s “personal law firm” by withholding files that could embarrass him.
They point to Bondi’s February 2025 Fox News claim that she had Epstein’s “client list” on her desk, a statement later clarified by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt as referring to all ‘Epstein-related paperwork’.
The lawmakers also note the DOJ’s dismissal of cases against Trump associates Waltine Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira in the classified documents probe, arguing that the continued sealing of Smith’s report violates DOJ precedent.
Public reaction to the Democrats’ demand has been mixed.
On X, some users speculate that the request could backfire, potentially exposing Democratic figures like Bill Clinton, who also associated with Epstein.
Others view it as a strategic move to pressure the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, some MAGA supporters, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, have expressed frustration with the DOJ’s claim that no client list exists, citing Maxwell’s “black book” as evidence to the contrary.
At a July 8, 2025, Cabinet meeting, Trump reacted angrily to a reporter’s question about the Epstein case, dismissing it as a distraction from pressing issues like Texas flooding.
Bondi, present at the meeting, defended the administration’s handling of the files but faced criticism from both sides for overpromising on disclosures.
The DOJ confirmed receipt of the Democrats’ letter but declined to comment further.
With Republicans controlling the House Judiciary Committee, the request is unlikely to gain traction, though it underscores the bipartisan interest in Epstein’s files.
Republican Senators Ted Cruz and John Kennedy have also supported declassification, with Cruz emphasizing the public’s right to know “who is implicated in abusing children.”
As the debate continues, the Epstein case remains a lightning rod for controversy, with no clear resolution in sight.
The Democrats’ push for transparency aims to hold the DOJ accountable, but whether it will yield new information about Trump—or others—remains uncertain.
