In a dramatic escalation of their public falling-out, President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have traded barbs over social media, with Musk making a bombshell claim that Trump is named in unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files.
The accusation, posted on Musk’s platform X on June 5, 2025, has ignited a firestorm of speculation, political maneuvering, and calls for transparency, despite a lack of evidence to support the claim.
By Saturday, Musk’s posts mysteriously vanished from X, raising questions about the motives behind the allegation and its rapid retraction.
The Claim That Shook Washington
Musk’s now-deleted post on X read: “Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files.
That is the real reason they have not been made public.
Have a nice day, DJT!”
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO followed up with, “Mark this post for the future.
The truth will come out,” but provided no evidence to substantiate his claim.
The accusation came amid a heated dispute over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a budget reconciliation bill that Musk has publicly criticized as “pork-filled” and a “disgusting abomination.”
The White House swiftly dismissed Musk’s allegation as “unfortunate,” with press secretary Karoline Leavitt stating, “This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.”
Trump himself responded on Truth Social, sharing a post from Epstein’s former lawyer, David Schoen, who claimed, “I was hired to lead Jeffrey Epstein’s defense as his criminal lawyer 9 days before he died… He had no information to hurt President Trump.”
A History of Acquaintance, Not Evidence
Trump and Epstein were known to have socialized in the 1980s and 1990s, with documented appearances together at events, including a 1997 party at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
Flight logs confirm Trump flew on Epstein’s private plane seven times in the 1990s, but no evidence has emerged linking him to Epstein’s criminal activities.
In a 2002 New York Magazine interview, Trump called Epstein a “terrific guy,” but later distanced himself, claiming a falling out over a real estate dispute 15 years before Epstein’s 2019 arrest.
While Trump’s name appears in previously released Epstein court documents, no accusations of wrongdoing have been substantiated.
A 2016 deposition from an Epstein accuser mentioned spending time with Epstein at Trump’s Atlantic City casino, but she did not allege meeting Trump or any misconduct by him.
Despite this, Musk’s claim has reignited long-standing conspiracy theories about unreleased Epstein files, with some speculating they contain incriminating details about high-profile figures.
Political Fallout and Calls for Transparency
Musk’s accusation has fueled demands for the full release of Epstein-related documents.
Democratic Representatives Stephen Lynch and Robert Garcia sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel, urging clarification on Musk’s claim and a timeline for declassifying remaining files.
“The American people deserve to know the truth,” the lawmakers wrote, questioning why no new records have been released since February 2025, when Bondi’s “Phase 1” disclosure was criticized for containing mostly public information.
On the Republican side, Trump allies like Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene have reaffirmed their support for the president, dismissing Musk’s claims as baseless.
Meanwhile, far-right influencers and conspiracy theorists, who have long speculated about Epstein’s connections to elites, have seized on Musk’s post to amplify calls for transparency—ironically aligning with Democrats on the issue, though for different reasons.
The deletion of Musk’s Epstein-related posts by Saturday morning has raised eyebrows, with X users greeted by a “Hmm…this page doesn’t exist” message.
Some speculate Musk backtracked to avoid legal or political repercussions, while others see it as an attempt to de-escalate the feud.
Musk’s father, Errol Musk, called the claim a “silly mistake” and expressed hope for reconciliation between his son and Trump, likening their clash to “two elephant bulls” sparring.
Musk’s motives remain unclear.
His criticism of Trump’s bill, which includes plans to eliminate electric vehicle tax incentives—a potential $3 billion hit to Tesla—suggests a personal stake in the feud.
Musk’s departure from his role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last week, coupled with his claim that Trump’s 2024 election victory relied on his support, points to deeper tensions.
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” Musk posted, accusing Trump of “ingratitude.”

The Epstein Files: What’s Really at Stake?

The so-called “Epstein files” refer to a vast collection of documents, flight logs, and evidence gathered by federal authorities in investigations into Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.
While thousands of pages have been released, including from a 2015 defamation lawsuit against Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, significant portions remain sealed or redacted, fueling speculation.
Trump has pledged to release more Epstein files, a promise reiterated during his 2024 campaign.
However, Bondi has cited the need to protect victims and the complexity of reviewing voluminous evidence as reasons for delays.
The lack of transparency has frustrated both political parties, with some questioning whether the administration is shielding powerful figures—though no evidence supports Musk’s specific claim about Trump.
The Trump-Musk spat, once confined to policy disagreements, has turned deeply personal, with implications for both men’s influence.
Musk, who donated over $200 million to Trump’s campaign, was a key ally before his abrupt exit from DOGE.
Trump’s threats to cancel Musk’s government contracts, including those for SpaceX, have raised concerns about the U.S.’s reliance on Musk’s companies for critical infrastructure, such as NASA’s astronaut transport.
As the feud unfolds, it underscores the fragility of alliances built on mutual convenience.
Musk’s Epstein claim, while unsubstantiated, has amplified public distrust in government transparency and reignited debates about Epstein’s elite connections.
Whether the remaining files will be released—and what they might reveal—remains an open question, but the clash between two of the world’s most powerful men ensures the issue will stay in the spotlight.
