A NorCal man now gets a 12 year prison sentence for the fatal stabbing of his 67-year-old neighbor, local authorities and news outlets report.
A 27-year-old man from Hayward is set to face formal sentencing next week for the fatal stabbing of his 67-year-old neighbor, an incident that transpired in 2022 and remains shrouded in mystery regarding its motive.
Chad Williams pleaded no contest to a charge of voluntary manslaughter with a knife enhancement, a plea deal that resulted in the dismissal of more serious murder charges and a 12-year prison sentence.
Williams is currently held at Santa Rita Jail and will receive his official sentencing on December 20.
He will be credited for the two years he has already spent in custody since his arrest following the tragic events of July 24, 2022.
The victim, Thomas Boyd, was discovered stabbed to death near the swimming pool of their shared apartment complex on Amador Street.
At the time, police reports indicated that Williams’ girlfriend had informed authorities that he was experiencing a “mental breakdown.”
Notably, Williams and Boyd were not acquainted prior to this violent incident.
The circumstances surrounding Boyd’s death are particularly troubling, as they highlight a series of alarming events in Williams’ past.
At the time of the stabbing, Williams was already on probation for a previous assault charge.
This earlier case involved serious allegations that he and three accomplices had sexually assaulted a group of teenagers during a gathering in Berkeley.
Originally charged with oral copulation of minors in concert, Williams and his co-defendants ultimately accepted a plea deal that allowed them to plead no contest to lesser assault charges in exchange for jail time followed by probation.
The 2018 sexual assault case revealed disturbing details about Williams’ past.
He allegedly admitted to having oral sex with two underage girls, aged 15 and 16, but denied any knowledge of a firearm that was reportedly present during the assault.
According to the girls, one of the suspects brandished a gun, and the group then proceeded to beat, rob, and sexually assault five teenagers inside a Berkeley apartment.
The upcoming sentencing for Williams not only marks the conclusion of a tragic chapter for the victim’s family but also serves as a stark reminder of the serious implications surrounding mental health issues and past criminal behavior.
The community is left grappling with questions about how such violence could occur in their midst and what preventative measures can be taken to ensure safety and support for individuals in distress.
As the date of sentencing approaches, many in Hayward are reflecting on the impact of this case, considering the broader societal issues of crime and mental health.
It is a poignant moment for the community as they seek to heal from the aftermath of this senseless tragedy and address the underlying factors that contribute to such violent acts.
