Authorities are now investigating the death of a Bay area body that was found during a garbage cleanup in the city of Vallejo.
The Solano County coroner is currently investigating a troubling incident that unfolded on Christmas Eve in Vallejo, California, where a body was discovered in an area undergoing cleanup by public works crews.
This unsettling finding has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the death and the treatment of the unsheltered population in the city.
Discovery During Cleanup Operations
According to reports, a public works crew was utilizing heavy machinery, including a backhoe, to clear away illegally dumped construction debris when they stumbled upon the body.
Vallejo Councilmember Cristina Arriola confirmed that the crew was engaged in routine cleanup operations at the time of the discovery.
However, she noted that it remains unclear if the backhoe played any role in the individual’s death.
Concerns from Community Advocates
Jose Carrizales, an advocate for unsheltered individuals, expressed his heartbreak upon learning that an unhoused person may have died during the cleanup process.
He emphasized the need to recognize the humanity of those living without shelter, stating, “They are dealing with a human being, not quote-unquote trash.”
Carrizales’s remarks highlight the broader issue of how society often views the unsheltered population.
City Response and Investigation
In response to the incident, City Manager Andrew Murray released a statement acknowledging the discovery and confirming that the city is actively investigating the matter.
He reassured the public that more information would be provided as it becomes available.
Additionally, Murray mentioned that city workers involved in the operation would be receiving support services as a result of the traumatic discovery.
Calls for Greater Safety Measures
Carrizales has voiced his concerns regarding the lack of adequate safety precautions taken by the city to protect the unsheltered community.
He stressed the importance of performing thorough checks before commencing cleanup activities, stating, “Common sense should tell what the first step should be.
However long it takes – 15 minutes, five minutes, an hour – making absolutely sure that there is no human body in that spot.”

The Solano County coroner is currently working to identify the deceased individual and will determine the cause and time of death.
As the investigation unfolds, Carrizales and other advocates are calling for answers and emphasizing the need for the city to treat the unhoused population with dignity and respect.
“Whoever he is, my condolences to the family,” Carrizales added.
“My heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family.”
His comments reflect a growing demand for compassion and accountability in how local authorities address the needs and rights of the unsheltered community.
