Nathaniel Rodriguez is the sole survivor of this horrific crash, which took place on December 15, and has since endured a series of harrowing medical challenges.
The Heartbreaking Aftermath
Nathaniel’s mother, Adriana Shrem, has been by her son’s side at UC Irvine Medical Center, where she has spent countless sleepless nights.
Since the accident, Nathaniel has undergone seven surgeries, confronting a multitude of injuries.
Tragically, he suffered severe burns and remains on a ventilator.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, both of Nathaniel’s arms had to be amputated below the elbows due to the extent of his injuries.
Additionally, he broke both of his legs and is currently receiving antibiotics to combat a bacterial infection affecting his skin.
“You know, you never think this can happen to you until it happens,” Shrem expressed, capturing the shock and despair that has enveloped their family since the crash.
A Day-to-Day Struggle for Survival
As Nathaniel fights for his life, his condition remains critical.
Shrem has shared the ongoing challenges they face, stating, “He needs a specialist for the head, the eyes, the lips, and his condition just remains the same: critical.”
Each day Nathaniel emerges from surgery is considered a blessing, reinforcing the family’s hope amidst overwhelming circumstances.
“That’s all I could wish for,” Shrem said, emphasizing the fragility of their situation.
The crash occurred on the eastbound side of the freeway near Riverside Avenue, when the vehicle veered off the road, struck a tree stump, and ignited into flames.

Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
In light of this tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been established to assist Nathaniel’s family with medical expenses and ongoing care.

“(Don’t) take life for granted,” she implored.
