A teacher and student have now been killed in a private Christian school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, local authorities have confirmed.
In a heartbreaking incident on Monday, a teenage student opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, resulting in the deaths of a teacher and another student just days before the Christmas break.
The shooter, identified as a 17-year-old female student, also died at the scene, with police indicating her death was a likely suicide.
The tragedy unfolded around 11 a.m. when the shooter unleashed gunfire within the school, wounding several others in the process.
According to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, two students were critically injured, while four others sustained less severe injuries.
The chaos left every person in the building a victim, a sentiment echoed by Chief Barnes as he expressed his dismay over the incident occurring so close to the holiday season. “Every child, every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever,” he stated.
The school, which serves approximately 390 students from kindergarten through high school, is a nondenominational Christian institution.
In the aftermath, families were reunited at a nearby medical facility, where parents anxiously embraced their children, grateful for their safety.
Witnesses described the emotional scene as parents tightly held their kids, some even draping adult-sized coats around them for comfort amidst the unfolding crisis.

“I don’t know why, and I feel like if we did know why, we could stop these things from happening,” he remarked.
Emergency responders, including a team that happened to be in training just three miles away, rushed to the scene after a 911 call was made reporting an active shooter.
Investigators believe the shooter used a 9mm pistol, although specific details regarding the weapon have not been disclosed publicly.
Chief Barnes mentioned that the school did not have metal detectors, asserting that schools should remain safe spaces for children.
In the wake of the shooting, federal agents joined local law enforcement in investigating the incident.
Police secured the area, blocking off roads around the school, and no shots were fired by law enforcement during their response.
In a brief statement on social media, Abundant Life Christian School requested prayers for all affected by the tragedy.
One parent, Bethany Highman, rushed to the school and learned through FaceTime that her daughter was safe.
“As soon as it happened, your world stops for a minute. Nothing else matters,” she said, capturing the intense fear and urgency that parents felt during the crisis.
President Joe Biden responded to the shooting by calling on Congress to enact universal background checks, a national red flag law, and other gun control measures.
He stated, “We can never accept senseless violence that traumatizes children, their families, and tears entire communities apart.”
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers echoed this sentiment, deeming it “unthinkable” that a child or teacher would not return home after a day at school.
