LOCAL NEWS: A Mexican cartel leader has now been arrested in Riverside, California after faking his death, authorities have confirmed.
The latest update now reveals that the high-ranking leader of a Mexican drug cartel accused of living in the U.S. under a phony identity after faking his own death is set to appear in federal court Tuesday.
In a significant development in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking, a prominent leader of a Mexican drug cartel has been apprehended on federal charges.
Cristian Fernando Gutierrez Ochoa, who is the son-in-law of the notorious Jalisco New Generation cartel leader known as “El Mencho,” was arrested this week in Riverside, California.
The arrest follows a lengthy investigation that revealed he had been living under a false identity after allegedly faking his own death to evade law enforcement.
According to the Justice Department, Gutierrez Ochoa, 37, had fled Mexico to escape authorities following a shocking incident in 2021 where he kidnapped two members of the Mexican Navy.
This brazen act was reportedly an attempt to secure the release of “El Mencho’s” wife, who had been detained by Mexican authorities.
In a twist of irony, Gutierrez Ochoa’s father-in-law, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” allegedly told his associates that he had killed Gutierrez Ochoa for lying.
However, instead of facing his fate, Gutierrez Ochoa managed to escape to the U.S. to be with “El Mencho’s” daughter.
Prosecutors have charged Gutierrez Ochoa with conspiring to import thousands of kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine into the United States.
He is also accused of employing violence to further the cartel’s illegal operations, underscoring the brutal tactics often associated with the Jalisco cartel.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco highlighted the significance of this arrest, stating, “The Jalisco Cartel—one of the world’s most violent and prolific drug trafficking organizations—is weaker today because of the tenacious efforts of law enforcement to track down and arrest a cartel leader who allegedly faked his own death and assumed a false identity to evade justice and live a life of luxury in California.”
The arrest is a notable victory for U.S. law enforcement agencies that have been actively pursuing members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, which has been responsible for an alarming increase in violence and drug trafficking across the region.
The cartel is known for its ruthless methods and has been implicated in numerous violent incidents.
In a related note, the U.S. State Department has offered a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the capture of “El Mencho,” underscoring the high priority placed on dismantling his criminal organization.
The cartel leader remains a significant figure in the drug trade, and his arrest is seen as crucial in efforts to disrupt the cartel’s operations.
Adding to the family’s notoriety, Gutierrez Ochoa’s brother-in-law, Rubén Oseguera, known as “El Menchito,” was recently convicted in a U.S. federal court.
He faced charges related to the violent downing of a military helicopter, which was part of the broader strategy used by the cartel to maintain control and expand its operations.
“El Menchito” was found guilty of conspiring to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine in the United States and using a firearm in connection with a drug conspiracy.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to dismantle the Jalisco New Generation cartel and hold its leaders accountable for their actions.
The arrest of Gutierrez Ochoa represents a significant step forward in this ongoing battle against drug trafficking and organized crime.
