The state of Kentucky has been awarded $5 million in funding for new jobs by the U.S. Department of Labor, a press release on Tuesday confirmed.
The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a significant funding initiative, awarding $5 million to bolster disaster-relief employment and workforce training for residents of Kentucky as the state works to recover from the severe storms that struck in 2023.
This funding is part of a broader effort to support communities impacted by natural disasters and to help residents regain stability through employment opportunities.
Earlier this year, on July 24, 2023, the Department of Labor unveiled a National Dislocated Worker Grant totaling up to $20 million, with an initial allocation of $6.6 million designated for the Kentucky Department of Workforce Development.
This grant aims to provide temporary employment opportunities for individuals engaged in crucial tasks such as debris removal and the delivery of humanitarian assistance across several hard-hit counties, including Bell, Carter, Elliott, Harlan, Lawrence, Morgan, and Powell.
The severe storms that hit in February 2023 compounded the challenges faced by these communities, which were still reeling from the effects of a catastrophic flood in 2022.
The relentless heavy rains caused extensive damage to infrastructure, further complicating recovery efforts in areas that had already suffered significant losses.
In response to the devastation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued a major disaster declaration on May 9, 2023, which enabled Kentucky to seek additional funding for recovery efforts.
This funding initiative is overseen by the Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration and is supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014.
The National Dislocated Worker Grants are designed to provide targeted assistance to state and local dislocated worker programs, allowing them to temporarily expand their capacity to serve individuals who have lost their jobs due to large-scale, unexpected economic disruptions.
The goal of this funding is not only to provide immediate relief but also to help residents acquire valuable skills and training that can enhance their employability in the long term.
By focusing on workforce development, the Kentucky Department of Workforce Development aims to empower individuals to rebuild their lives and contribute to the recovery of their communities.
As Kentucky continues to navigate the aftermath of these natural disasters, this funding represents a critical investment in the state’s future, fostering resilience and supporting the workforce as it adapts to changing economic conditions.
The Department of Labor remains committed to assisting those affected by such disasters, ensuring that they have the resources and support necessary to overcome these challenges and thrive in the years to come.
