A fatality has now been confirmed on the I-680 after a teen was struck by a Subaru Crosstrek while going the speed limit, authorities stated.
A 17-year-old boy from San Ramon lost his life early Wednesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while on Interstate 680.
The collision occurred around 4:40 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway, just south of the Crow Canyon Road exit, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Emergency responders pronounced the teenager dead at the scene.
As of Wednesday, authorities had not released the teen’s identity, as they are awaiting the notification of his family.
This tragic incident has left the community in shock, as friends and family grapple with the sudden loss.
In a statement, the CHP detailed that a 63-year-old woman from Richmond was driving a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek at the speed limit when the encounter occurred.
The CHP reported that the teen emerged from the right shoulder of the freeway, and despite the woman’s attempts to brake, she was unable to avoid the collision.
The impact occurred in the third lane from the left, highlighting the dangers of being on the freeway at such early hours.
Authorities have not yet determined why the teenager was on the freeway, and they are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
They are calling for witnesses who may have seen what transpired to come forward.
