Donald Trump is now returning to Chicago since the 16′ protests led him to flee the rally at the University of Illinois-Chicago campus.
Former President Donald Trump is set to participate in a panel discussion at the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention in Chicago.
This will mark only the second time Trump has visited the city since 2016, when massive protests forced him to cancel a campaign rally at the University of Illinois-Chicago campus.
The panel is scheduled for noon on Wednesday at the Hilton Chicago on Michigan Avenue.
Trump will take questions from three journalists – Rachel Scott of ABC News, Harris Faulkner of Fox News, and Kadia Goba of Semafor – about the “most pressing issues facing the Black community.”
Trump has rarely visited Chicago since his presidency.
He traveled to the city only once as president, in October 2019, and has not returned since losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden or launching his bid for a second term.
The upcoming panel discussion represents a return to the city for Trump, which has been the site of significant protests against him in the past.
This event will provide an opportunity for the former president to engage with the Black community and the media on key issues.
“While NABJ does not endorse political candidates as a journalism organization, we understand the serious work of our members, and welcome the opportunity for them to ask the tough questions that will provide the truthful answers Black Americans want and need to know,” NABJ President Ken Lemon said in a statement.
Democrats are set to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris for president at the party’s convention Aug. 19-22 in Chicago. Harris was also invited to participate in the convention and “her confirmation is pending,” according to a statement from NABJ leaders.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, who is an enthusiastic supporter of Harris, said in a statement the city was prepared to protect Trump, who survived an assassination attempt on July 13 in Pennsylvania.
“My administration’s values and practice are in complete opposition to former President Donald Trump’s agenda, but I want the people of Chicago to know that city departments and agencies are fully prepared to uphold safety during his scheduled visit,” Johnson said.
Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and other groups announced plans to protest Trump’s appearance, which comes one day before the annual Lollapalooza music festival is set to take over Grant Park, which is across the street from the hotel, per WTTW.
In his statement announcing he had accepted NABJ’s invitation, Trump’s campaign said he accomplished more “more for Black Americans than any other president in recent history by implementing America First policies on the economy, immigration, energy, law and order, and foreign policy.”
“Black voters know that President Trump is the only presidential candidate who can deliver results on day one because he already has, including landmark unemployment rates for Black Americans, increased median income for Black households, historic permanent funding for HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), comprehensive bipartisan criminal justice reform, and nearly $50 billion in funds to revitalize Opportunity Zones,” according to the Trump campaign statement.

Biden now orders a review on how the gunman got close to Trump after a Pennsylvania rally almost witnessed a presidential tragedy.
Donald Trump arrived on Sunday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he will be formally nominated as the Republican presidential candidate later this week after surviving an assassination attempt that has aggravated an already bitter U.S. political divide.
President Joe Biden, a Democrat, has now ordered a review of how a 20-year-old man with an AR-15-style rifle got close enough to shoot at Trump from a rooftop on Saturday, reports Reuters.
Trump, as a former president, has lifetime protection by the U.S. Secret Service.
Trump, 78, was holding a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania – a key state in the Nov. 5 election – when shots rang out, hitting his right ear and leaving his face streaked with blood.
The crowd behind the former president was in shock, with supporters confused about whether to protect the candidate or not, per evidence from the video footage.
His campaign said he was doing well.
“That reality is just setting in,” Trump told the Washington Examiner on Sunday.
“I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”
Sadly, one person in the crowd was killed and two others wounded before Secret Service agents fatally shot the suspect.
Both Trump and Biden on Sunday sought calm and unity.
Trump is due to accept his party’s formal nomination at the Republican National Convention with a speech on Thursday.
He pumped his fist in the air several times as he descended the stairs from his plane after arriving in Milwaukee.
“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together.
The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” Trump told the Washington Examiner.
Biden delivered a televised address from the Oval Office in the White House on Sunday.
“There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence ever. Period. No exceptions.
We can’t allow this violence to be normalized,” he said.
“The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated.
It’s time to cool it down.”
Biden and Trump spoke to each other on Saturday night after the shooting.
First Lady Jill Biden also spoke with former First Lady Melania Trump on Sunday afternoon, said a White House official.
There are many speculations floating online about how the gunman was allowed to get so close to Trump.
