Creighton McCarthy was outside with his Rottweiler, Rocky, when an unexpected confrontation occurred.
According to McCarthy, a nearby dog owner was walking his large pit bull when it suddenly broke free from its leash and charged at Rocky.
As the two dogs engaged in a fierce struggle, both owners rushed to intervene, attempting to separate the animals.
McCarthy recounted the frantic scene: “A guy was walking his dog and saw my dog in the garage.
The pit bull broke its chain and attacked my dog.
Everyone jumped in to try to get it off, and I got bit in the process.”
A Medical Emergency
In the midst of the chaos, the pit bull’s owner suffered a medical emergency.
Simi Valley Police Department Senior Officer Casey Nicholson explained, “In the excitement of the event, he ended up suffering a medical emergency.”
Tragically, the man collapsed shortly after handing his dog’s leash to McCarthy’s son.
McCarthy described the pit bull owner’s distressing condition as first responders arrived.
“His dog had torn off one of his fingers, and his hand was all mangled.
He was having trouble breathing, and then all of a sudden he grabbed his chest and just keeled over next to the truck,” he recalled.
Consequences of the Attack
Despite the harrowing situation, McCarthy’s dog, Rocky, survived with only minor injuries.
However, the same could not be said for the pit bull, which died at the scene.
Animal Control has since taken possession of the dog, but the circumstances surrounding its death remain under investigation as officials seek to determine the cause.
